Schools have counselors now?

There weren't any in any of the schools I went to until college. If you had a problem, you went to a one of your teachers or occasionally the vice principal.

Or is this an American thing?

Yeah, most schools in the US have some kind of counselor (or several, depending on school size).

We have school counselors, but I've never known anyone to actually visit one.

The one at my HS had frequent visitors, though I wasn't among them.

TBH I always just use "he" in cases of anonymity because it's the shortest pronoun to type, doesn't have the horrible connotations of "it", and doesn't sound as silly as made up ones like "xir."
Eh, the correct pronoun is 'they' for all your gender-impartial third-person needs.

Yep, even our relatively small highschool had 2 of them. As it turns out, the formative years of one's personality are a good time for free counselling.

My school had councilors too. They claimed to kept everything private, though I'm not sure I would trust that. Never heard of anyone using them either.

But they existed, at least.

I use that out loud, but in text "he" seems to come out most because it's fastest to type. "They" feels weird to use when the person in question is present in the conversation.

Spent most of my third, fourth, filth, and seventh grade talking to counselors for various things...

Speech classes because... I have no idea actually. I forget.

Bullying.

Lashing out at bullies.

Socialness because apparently I wasn't doing good socially despite being friends with most of my grade or at least not enemies.

Theeeeen these special teacher that does the whole class where you go during another period and have to do all this extra bull shit because of it where I ended up talking and ended up realizing that... Nope. It's not confidential.Fun fact: This was around the time I discovered MLP:FiM so I talked a bit about that. 2 + 2 = Figure it out.

However that's not the case.

Yeah, there are counsellors, however my experiences aren't final... Sooo.

I don't say anything to people unless I am certain I can either trust that person entirely or I am fully anonymous.

Either get to know them first in one on one. Talk to them about your concerns. Hell, write a letter, put in on the front desk as an anonymous message or something and have a similar letter sent to you when they get back. Whatever makes you feel comfortable doing this would help considering your situation.

Hope everything works out :)

I remember pre-high-school grades being worse than high-school.

If you went to someone because you were being bullied, your bullies would be told that you reported them, but they would not be given anything other than a warning.

Programs were severely lacking as well. I was scheduled to take a workshop for students with low self-esteem, but then they realized that there was no such program, so they bumped me into a program meant to reform violent bullies.

There's lots of terrible stuff I remember from grade-school. High-school was much better for me.

Oh nooo.

My parents got them to do it.

I went home a few times and complained about it and kind of...

Lashed out. Verbally. A lot. Basically, I made myself more of a target :P

The only thing slightly similar (and I mean slightly) is that in primary there was a group of people, myself included, that couldn't read properly, or showed no interest in reading whatsoever. I was of the latter category, but soon found that I did like to read. I'm rather glad I went to it, or I may not have ever actually developed an interest in literature.

In most of the schools I've seen, the counselor's job is partly the traditional one of emotional counseling, but they also get the job of dealing with people's schedules and talking to them about careers/future plans. Not many people seemed to go to them for emotional counseling (that I noticed), but they were there all the time for other things.

+1

Sometimes people just need to get things off their chest, angst or not. Go ahead.

There's old school related stuff that I've been reminded of, including a friend who was taken away by child-services because they deemed her dying her hair as deviant and suicidal behaviour while a person I know who did have suicidal tendencies was told to just toughen up.
