TBH I always just use "he" in cases of anonymity because it's the shortest pronoun to type, doesn't have the horrible connotations of "it", and doesn't sound as silly as made up ones like "xir."

There weren't any in any of the schools I went to until college. If you had a problem, you went to a one of your teachers or occasionally the vice principal.

I just always use he when not sure. Not because of sexism; because of habit. If anyone takes offense, it's easily changed to the proper one.
