Some apparently don't cook, either. It's a foreign mindset to me, but one that's not entirely uncommon.

E: Dutchling is trying, though. This is a good thing and should be encouraged and nurtured. Basic urban survival skills are important.

I'm the only person in my flat who cooks beyond micromeals and currys.

When I was in high school I was literally working 18 hours a day--6 AM to midnight--so I had to learn most of those survival skills in college.

You don't need that much time to learn how to make pasta or rice, Vec.

... It's not that I could cook literally nothing...  Sorry, I don't consider "can make crepes and shitty fried eggs and toast and can follow a recipe" cooking.

... yeah, that counts. I was talkin' about folks that live off cafeterias, restaurants, and other people's cooking. Pretty much never touched a kitchen. I've met a few that couldn't work a flipping microwave. Not because they were stupid or whatever. Just because they never had, and had no interest in figuring it out.

Man I think I'm a halfway decent cook sometimes and I still can't into crepes. How do they work?

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I can chemically and thermally alter edible matter in such a way that it usually continues to be edible matter that will not fatally poison the consumer after the conclusion of the process. All else is variable.

I love cooking and I don't mind cleaning afterwards, but I hate eating alone.
