Reminds me of a story about two cops who were violently harassing these people for stealing their parking spot... and the officers were beat up and hospitalized.

and people STILL took the cop's side overwhelmingly (Mind you... IMO the real villain of that was the Dispatcher... People actually did call the police on the cops because they were acting unlawfully... and the dispatcher didn't do anything...)

So add in Frumple that publically they will probably still side with the corrupt cop and perfect!

At least if you were stabbed by a criminal people would be hissing and booing at the criminal. Get stabbed by a corrupt cop and people might say you jumped into the knife or threatened him somehow.

overwhelmingly
...
I hope they got the exact details right. Because if so then..wow, the reputation of a cop really masks how bad these things are-if this is a real case of corruption in the police. :S

Reminds me of our own corruption here!

I always feel nervous around police/security guards. Especially ones with guns.
This is not a good trait at all.
Personally, it always makes me feel a bit safer. Knowing that, if someone suddenly starts shooting poeple, there will be someone who will fire back that actually knows how to use the gun not just someone who happens to own one always reassures me.
Well maybe for you, but I know that I act nervously/suspiciously even when there's nothing wrong. So I think "what if they think I'm a criminal and apprehend me (or in the case of guns start shooting. I mean, it would only take a half-second decision and maybe another 3 or 4 seconds for me to be dead from shock of ruptured internal organs) oh god that would be awful." And then I become more nervous and am very much aware that only makes me look more suspicious.
Also because police are racist and have to find someone to arrest regardless of illegal activities but I don't think either of those are likely to get me spontaneously arrested.

... yeah, I'm definitely in the more-nervous-around-cops-than-anything crowd. Criminal's probably only after my money, maybe break a leg or something. Cop goes bad, I'm probably either dead or framed for something, and either way my life is effectively over -- and even better, at least the criminal would probably end up in jail for it. Cop's probably going to go free for putting me in the grave, jail, or hospital. Maybe even get a raise or promotion, a bit down the line.

M'also in the states, though, and have had family in politics. Seen too much bad news and know of too much back-room stuff to be particularly comfortable around law enforcement. Bit too much institutional corruption, at this point.

This is my perspective also.

With a criminal, you have at least some chance of negotiation or self-defense.

In a confrontation with a cop, you have zero chance of either.  They want absolute and immediate submission to their authority, and anything else results in escalation of force.  Police nationwide are trained to behave according to the Use of Force Continuum, which is basically three strikes and you're dead.  Strike one is verbal command/warning.  Strike two is non-lethal force/pain compliance.  Strike three is lethal force.  Once again, this is how they are trained to behave in any encounter, even if the suspect they're interacting with is unarmed and non-aggressive.  So in the wrong situation, it doesn't even matter if you're dealing with a good or bad cop, if they're acting by the book.  A good cop will still end up severely injuring or killing, for example, someone who is unable to comply with orders because they're very obviously having a seizure.

I'll be honest, I don't recall ever hearing of a policeman shooting someone having a seizure.

Played The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 2

Fucking hell someone at Telltale feeds off the misery of others. Why can't there be something genuinely happy that doesn't get ruined in the next scene?

Some quick google searching.  Couldn't find the story that I was thinking of when I wrote my previous post, but still...

There are many, many stories out there of people being injured or killed by police for failing to comply to orders while in a medical emergency, and in plenty of those cases, the police were warned ahead of time of the medical situation or the call was for paramedics and police showed up first.  I could post dozens more, but I was looking specifically for stuff relating to seizures.  I have a friend who was abused in a situation like this.  He was given a bad psychiatric prescription, and he could feel himself slipping into a confused state of mind.  He asked his girlfriend to call for help.  Police showed up before paramedics, and saw that he wasn't behaving normally.  So they kicked him to the ground, dug their knees into his spine, and gave him permanent nerve damage in his wrists with their cheap zip-tie handcuffs.

Seattle PD is pretty bad.

He's got a knife! Broad daylight. A policeman pulls up to an intersection and spots a 50 yr old indian guy waking across the crosswalk holding a block of wood and a tiny knife. Policeman gets out, walks up ordering him to drop the knife, guy is old and confused and doesn't immediately do it, officer shoots him dead. Witnesses say the victim made absolutely no threatening movement, that the officer closed the distance to the man quickly and immediately and then shot him. Government refuses to prosecute the murder.

Now that we've arrested him, let's choke this vomiting man to death!

This black man might be a suspect, let's strangle and punch him! Dude was even calm enough to say something like "Please stop strangling me, sir."

Sorry, we can't show you the dash cam footage that you are lawfully guaranteed to be able to request. We "lost" it along with thousands of others. Also note that "arrest for refusing to show identification" which is unlawful - and the police know it.

News station sues Seattle PD for not producing dash cam footage as required by law. Also note the guy who was arrested not for jaywalking, but because the crosswalk light turned to the "don't begin walking" flashing-hand sign. Which is totally normal to have happen when you cross a street.

Jaywalker comes back when police call out to him, then gets tased three times. When he complained, the administrator in charge of handling his complaint retaliated by getting him charged with other crimes.

Feds say Seattle PD might not be racist but certainly are unconstitutionally violent. 20% of violent encounters involving police were unconstitutional uses of police power. Complaints about policemen were handled at the precinct where the officer worked; where they were promptly ignored. 50% of excessive violence incidents involve minorities while only 30% of the city is nonwhite.

This is just the stuff I got in a few minutes' googling.

Yeah, by this point I'm fairly well convinced there is no situation that would result in me calling the police for help.

So... Police are like Robocop on full-on robot mode, but somehow with less pity?

Wow.
Just, wow.

Not all of them. But we do have a rotten tree creating a lot of rotten apples.

The system needs an overhaul.

Yeah, by this point I'm fairly well convinced there is no situation that would result in me calling the police for help.
I will if I want someone dead. Which is pretty much solely limited to witnessing a murder spree.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
