The saddest part is the comments... we are so fucked :/
News website comment threads are where fuckminded individuals gather. They have no power.

Except it pretty well reflects my experience with such topics IRL.

While people can debate about whether or not environmental issues are important, (I certainly think they are, though some disagree) saying that they don't exist is just denial.

Someone said on BBC news (in the comments) that electrolysing water takes up less energy than burning it makes.

So comments sections cannot into reality.

I'm not going to lie, I'm not *quite* sure what electrolysing water is...

So I'm unable to judge whether we could cover the energy cost by 'burning' an equivalent amount. ;)

I suck at chemistry but I think:

H2O <=> (1/2)O2 and 2H+ and 2e-

Where going to the right is electrolysing and to the left is burning?

Electrolysing water would create free hydrogen, to be used as fuel.

The point of it would be as energy *storage*, for future use, not energy generation. Along the same lines as those guys a year or so back who made petrol out of atmospheric carbon, you still need to get some energy somewhere to DO it.

So you'd use like, solar, or wind, or some other unstable energy source (you can't use solar in the night, for example) to electrolyze the hydrogen and then use it when that energy source is temporarily unavailable. Or use the solar energy to create free hydrogen for use in hydrogen fuel-cell cars and buses.

Or use the solar energy to reduce nicotineamide dinucleotide allowing it to enter a complex cycle in a poorly understood process known to the experts as 'farming' :P

What part of what I just said made you think for a moment that I would take away farm-land to create solar fields?

Seriously, what the hell?

YES LET'S GO FARM IN THE DESERT INSTEAD OF USING IT FOR SOLAR TOWERS TOTALLY A GOOD IDEA WOT WOT

Hey, Saudis do that.

Also it's not like I've been goofing around.

There's something about watching a group of extremely athletic muscular men wandering around a grassy field with distressed faces under omnipresent lights and perpetual noise that makes me feel all bad inside.

I saw a cat crying in a high place near the cafetaria today. :<

:<

Sometimes I hear cats screaming near my house. I can't tell if they're getting hurt or making babies.
