My dad keeps starting conversations with controversial statements and then getting upset if anyone challenges them. Both parties usually end up worse off. I thought I was losing the plot as he often denies starting the conversations, but I've seen him do it with other people now too. I haven't found a tactful way out of them other than perhaps agreeing with him, but this would cause more problems and I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.
