"Boss, this ham's spoiled."
"Make people want to buy it more."

I wish there was still a stupid thread.

In our defense, the reason we didn't know it was spoiled was because the "On Sale!" sticker covered the expiration date. On all of them.
Preeeeeetty sure the FDA would be interested in hearing about this.

Grocery stores are pretty much impossible to cause trouble for via Health Department shenanigans. Most grocery stores will get DOZENS of health code violations EVERY SINGLE VISIT, and nothing bad ever comes of it.
Yeah, I'm actually reasonably confident that not one single shit will be given, except by anyone who ate the stuff. Expiration dates are more guidelines than actual rules - they can often relabel stuff, if they're so inclined. Especially if it was a sell by date, instead.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Most stores I've been to, from small convenience stores to large department stores, will try to pull off shit like this.

If you can, don't buy the items near the front of a shelf, since items close to expiry are put to in front of fresher items to increase the chance of them getting sold.

I guess I'm stating the obvious, aren't I?

Ten-year-old me never knew that though. And when I was sent to grab a bag of milk the clerk sent me home with milk that had been expired for almost a week.

Nobody taught me to check the clip to see the expiry date.

Yea, it takes pretty libertarian consumer laws to get away with that shit. I mean they use a FIFO system for shelf stacking, but expirary dates are checked carefully.
I'm surprised nobody is doing anything about it though, taking on that sort of a problem is easy political capital.

Helgoland lives in North Korea. Pay no heed to the nationalism, that is just the daily brainwashing talking.

Actually it has already happened, you all just live in a virtual world, while suspended in life support pods, and the glorious leader uses your body heat as a fuel source.

-snicker-snack-
It's not really a waste to buy prepared food if you don't have the time or inclination to prepare it yourself. I know you're big on self-reliance and spartan living, but there's a reason that hundreds of thousands of restaurants exist: to serve people who can't or won't. It's OK to find value in places like that, so long as it's not every meal every day. If you find legitimate value in something, it's not a waste, and you shouldn't be guilty about finding that value.

As long as we're talking about grocery stores getting away with crap, one of my friends who works at a local chain posted this yesterday.

For the briefest of moments, youtube didn't suck again. I finally got around to youtube center and was able to disable that really shitty Dash protocol that youtube started using to piss me off. The sad part is the YT-Center seems to have some serious issues like playlists completely breaking (especially when autoplaying in full screen).

Sigh... I wish YouTube hadn't turned to crap those years ago.
