@Swimming: I swim like Mike from Startropics. If anyone throws me into deep water, I'll just punch the water out of the pool.

That's odd. There's a comedy program I watch sometimes, and despite the frequent crude jokes (commentary is provided by a mix of comedians, has-been celebrities, and TV personalities) they're usually very good at referring to transexuals by their preferred genders. You'd think a "serious" show would be better than that :/
If you think law & order is a serious show, even of the scare quote variety, I don't quite know what to tell you Siri. It has more in common with penny actor pornography than anything of merit.

... though that's probably speaking poorly of penny actor pornography :-\

I've seen... entirely too much of L&O in passing. Watching any of it has categorically worsened my life. It makes me want to strangle its director(s), most of the time. The rest of the time, it just makes me leave the room. In case you can't tell, I rather dislike the show.
Yeah, I kinda got that :P
My point still stands though. If a show that frequently features drunken frat boys doing life-threatening crap can be more sensitive towards LGBT topics than a long-running crime drama-type thing, it doesn't say much good about TV in general :P

Heh, I always noticed that American Dad is one of the few shows that aren't horrible about forcing their gay characters into female/male roles. It's really odd.

I was looking out my window and this squirrel was sitting in the road. Suddenly a truck speeds by and the squirrel is gone except for a tail, and a part of its body.

If I saw that I would have laughed at the comical nature of how much we value life, despite it being such a fragile thing.

That wasn't the show I was referring to. But that is surprising; my impression of FamilyCleaveland Dad has been almost entirely negative.

I once saw a squirrel run across the road and into a car. It bounced about two feet off, and ran back.

To be honest, it's pretty horrible. The only reason I watch it is because of Roger.

Comedies tend to be the most progressive of media, so a comedy show being better at showing trans/gay people than a "serious drama" isn't surprising at all.

Really?  I feel like the variance is bigger but the average is about the same.

Most the big, prime time comedies I know of tend to have a rather liberal slant. Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy, SNL, etc.

Maybe I don't know of enough and have some small sample size bias.

Tv (not only in the US) is pretty terrible at depicting subcultures, foreigners or anything for that matter. I'm always happy if the germans=nazi jokes on US-tv are at least funny or if they come up with stuff I hadn't heard yet (30 Rock had some really good ones). That show "Happy Endings" had a gay dude who wasn't overtly effeminate (by tv-standards) and seemed a bit more than a "I'm gay"-caricature. Got cancelled though.

I'm thinking specifically about The Big Bang Theory, which gets more popular the more misogynistic, homophobic, and racist it becomes.

Crime dramas seem to be especially bad, but that might just be because every single episode seems to involve some form of subculture that happens to be key to the case.

In other news, anxiety!
yay...
