Because those words don't have the precise sense I need, so I might as well circumlocute so that, at the very least, the reader won't be misled.

Keep getting people probation instead of jail; keep having them be still not happy.
Don't like it? Take your chance at trial.... You can tell these are the newbies, rather than the people who view jail as part of the cost of doing their business.

Also, I fed a stray outside cat; have for some time. Somebody killed it by slitting its stomach open and leaving it tied outside near my door.... Judging by the blood and struggle signs, It was alive when they left it like that.

Time to use some political capital to figure out who did this.

That's disgusting and horrible. The paranoid part of my brain is wondering if it was done by someone who wanted the act to get to you, so please be safe.

How can people do that? It's like the people who burn ants with a magnifying glass, or lob rocks at birds, or drown small animals, just because they can. I can forgive killing, when it's done unintentionally, or even when done knowingly so long as they honestly believe the cause a good one, and recognize the weight of what they're doing. But killing something for no ones benefit, in a way designed to cause suffering to the creature, or even to other people... How? Why? Do they view it as a fair trade? "I suffer, so so I'm going to make other things suffer too?"

It's a part of the human spirit I don't think I'll ever understand. And it makes me terribly sad.

*shrug* Then use your idiolect as you see fit.

It honestly puzzles me too, I suppose some people just have a scary lack of empathy.

Blort
You know, with all the obscure words we were throwing around I thought for a second this might be an obscure word I'd never heard of.
I figured probably not, but decided to look it up anyway.

The result greatly amuses me.

Use the word in the other language and italicize it. Problem solved!

Because damnit Vector, if whoever the fuck translated War and Peace can get away with that shit, so can you.

Swear to Zeus, half the reason I never into a triple digit page count with that book is because like a third of the damned thing wasn't in english. And that's the translated version! Maybe I just had a bad version, I'unno. But somewhere around page twelve I got tired of staring at a page and realizing if I actually wanted to know what the hell was going on I was going to have to break out three different X to English translation books.

"Warning: You must be this polylingual (English, French, Russian, German) to ride the Tolstoy Train."

E: Also, remember, this is English you're dealing with. If you're not blatantly stealing words from other languages, you are betraying the spirits of your ancestors. Do you want your great-great-great-great-great-grandparents to be disappointed in you? No? Then you've got a language to shanghai for your own amusement. To facilitate this process, I am offering alley access and a blackjack for a very affordable rental fee.

Arguing with folks about race on the internet oh god why.

"I am oppressed, therefore I get to say as many 'I hate white people' comments as I want and they have to take it seriously but not say anything and still be good friends with me!"

Yeah buster, I don't think so.

In my copy of War and Peace, the untranslated French or whatever was in the very back of the book as a huge footnote. Raeg. :<

Notes are good. But fuck them when placed at the end of the book. I don't want to flip to the frikkin' glossary in the back and keep track of two places at the same time!
