Not normal != broken.
And I'm not entirely sure being broken is a necessarily bad thing, honestly. Usually, yes, but sometimes you break in the right ways and it's... not that bad? Net positive? I consider myself broken (I seem mostly incapable of feeling anger or pride at this point, ferex, and I can't really seem to be able to feel spite/petty jealousy.) but I'm kinda' glad I'm missing (most of) the pieces I am. Causes some societal friction, but... eh.

And yeah, feels for folks. Dunno if there's anything I could offer beyond that. Worst I've got is a couple decades of bigot-induced isolation and what's appeared to be genetic depression (which, don't get me wrong, has involved hallucinations and pretty miserable times and whatnot, but generally wasn't really explicitly inflicted upon me. More of a passive thing.). Few (thankfully short term) psychotic breaks during the youth and generally really wonky social skills, but I haven't really felt all that bad for a good four or five years, now, especially compared to back then. Still displaying most of the physiological symptoms of depression (all tired, all the time), but mostly able to cope at this point, and getting better. Slowly.

I'm actually really glad I went through what I did.  I am way more interesting than I think I would have been otherwise.

What she said.

Double what she said.

Although in my case I think of it less as it making me a more interesting person and more that I actually picked up some incredibly valuable lessons from the entire experience. It took me places I wouldn't have ordinarily gone to, and it gave me incredible insights into humanity, emotions, the world in general... There are some wonderful things that just wouldn't be things without these experiences.

Don't get me wrong though, they were horrible unpleasant experiences, and I certainly lost a lot of time I'd kind of like back. But if a magic genie came along and offered to make them all have never happened, I'd tell the genie to do it, only if I could keep the lessons.

I also don't really regret going through all the things I did. It made me who I am today, and I'm happy with who I am today.

...that stupid thread thing I posted is just about the worst thing that happened to me.

All of the negative emotion I have ever felt over long periods of time--frustration, anger, etc.--is my fault. Every single bit of it. One day, I decided to stop doing that. And it worked, because my parents are both incredible at what they do and my community is tightly-knit and homogenous and I happen to be of the same race and orientation as all of them.

So my circumstances are ideal. It's damn hard to understand true sadness, true anger, true pain, because I've never felt any of that. I can't relate. I can't truly empathize with feelings I've never felt. My inability to empathize after a certain extent is probably my greatest weakness in my social life.

So, you're saying you recognize that others are suffering but don't understand what they're going through?

Well first off, recognizing that makes you a pretty good person in and of itself. So don't be hard on yourself.

Used to be very depressive. Drank a lot from an early age. I have distinct memories of staying up late and having to knock back double shots of whiskey by 7th grade, just to go to sleep.

Some of that no doubt stems from childhood trauma, some of which I've alluded to before. My folks split when I was three, ended up with my mom and living with *her* parents for a couple of years. Those were happy months. Then she met this guy. We moved in with him. I didn't like him. He didn't like me. Thought I was too scrawny, too weak, that I was stuck-up because I could read at age 4 (and as I later discovered, he couldn't read at 35). Shortly thereafter, they got married and the gloves came off for real.

So that covers up through age 18.....  :-\

i think he means he cant "fully" understand since he did not experience it firsthand himself.

I'm sorry misko.. But don't be aloof. Its good to tell people about these things. I've got no words for how disgusting that man sounds, but just know that there will always be people who understand what you're going through, like me…. I wish you luck, and hope you get away from that prick. I managed a similar escape, and I'm convinced you'll turn out fine in the end, regardless of how unfathomably hard it might seem some days to struggle through.

Hey guys, just a heads-up. There's some user called George-Lenington going around trolling the place. He spammed me a couple times and posted a picture of mutilated genitals on the Games You Wish Existed thread (you don't want to see it, believe me :'(). I notified ToadyOne already, but I just thought I'd let you know that he was around until Toady gets around to responding.

Thanks.

I, have, equally sad story, but unlike me good friend Mr. King here, I'd prefer not to go into it at detail in the moment.

I can sum it up quickly by saying my father isn't like most abusive fathers. He's a vampire. A Leech. A Honest to god, sociopathic, misanthropic vampire. He lives his entire life around making bad people look good and leeching, mentally, and economically, on everyone else. And he is more convincing then the devil. I am serious. He has made people do things (people who don;t even know him or anything about him) do everything from risk themselves getting fired to emotionally investing everything in him just so he can have his god-damned coffee. He once convinced Con Edison not to shut off lights after he decided not to pay (decided, not that he didn't have the money, decided.) for 6 months. He managed to get custody of me and my sister from my mom for a month after he beat my mom so hard she was forced to go to the hospital.

Damnit, A little more then I wanted to tell. Bloody sad thread. Must return to being aloof.
That sounds like me if I were actively evil.

I feel sorry for you having to live through that.
