And now you understand the social justice meaning behind "privilege". Or if you already did, then that's a very simple way to explain it. :3

Summary: Getting good shoes when you have Morton's toe sucks. Damn you, society!

While your issue may seem minor in the grand scale of things, this same effect relates to so many other problems, many of them not minor, that it is a grand scale problem.  I especially feel that this is a problem in psychiatry, where people who simply function differently are seen as having a disorder on the sole basis that their differences make compatibility with group structures that were set up exclusively for "normal" people (such as school) difficult.  That's where the principle you just described can easily veer off into nightmare fuel.

A side-effect of society where everything is geared toward mass production, I suppose.    10% of the population = one or two kids per classroom = not enough to justify another mass scale operation = fuck it you have a disorder and we're going to drug you into the best approximation of normalcy we can

Huh. I never even knew my toes were unusually proportioned. Welp, learn something every day. Probably explains why I still go home with aching legs every day after work.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

This is another point - for the longest time, I never understand why I had trouble or why the experience of trying to find shoes that fit seemed so much more miserable than it did for everyone else. When you've got a lot of subtle things like that acting on you, where you don't even know why things are so harder for you... it's demoralizing.

And yeah, SalmonGod has it right that this sort of thing is even worse when you get into systems like education.

(additional note: Shoes appropriate for the foot structure and a posture that works well with it are both pretty damn beneficial. Might be worth trying.)

It's possible. What I've got right now are some combat boots with some foam inserts that I, ah, sculpted with a razor. They work pretty well; it's very mild pain these days. But after the ER visit that followed the crafting, I don't think I'll ever be doing that again, so I'll need an alternative eventually.

Oddly, finding shoes that fit hasn't been too difficult for me lately, but on the other hand, my toes have adopted a curled position that puts the second at about the same length as my first, which I think has to do with the difficulty I had as a kid (which I attributed to my feet being goddamn gigantic). I'd often wear a given pair of shoes for far too long before getting a bigger one.

It may have been the long-term damage was already done, then. The curled toe is a long-term side effect from poor footwear during the developmental phase, and I don't think there's really any way to make it go away sort of surgery.

It sounds like you've pretty much adapted to shoes not fitting, heh. With all the negative side effects of that adaptation.

....now I'm going to have to check my toes when I get home. I might have this, although I've never thought much about it.

Uh... I have that toe thing and it doesn't cause me any problems. I guess I should keep avoiding boots, though.

There's also a degree of severity that plays a role as well. And wearing generally box-toed sneakers that are a bit larger than you should be wearing is the solution most people with it fall into.

For situations like climbing shoes, though, that didn't really exist as an option before now.

(It's also the reason I can't comfortably wear VFFs, which I otherwise love)

My TV is dead again, and I have no idea how to fix it. ;_;
When in doubt, punch it until it agrees to work again.

It was actually an act of Congress, in order to make school lunches meet nutritional standards.
