My new boss (maybe?) is not giving me the fairly simple things I need to do the things he wants me to do.
Wonders why I don't do them "on time."

It's the lack of equipment and workspace.... Your own secretary has told you this, repeatedly.

If at first you don't succeed, do it the way your freaking secretary told you to in the first place....

I am exhausted.

I swear, if he's using me just to use me.... I have no life and will find a way to make it right.

And most likely the said shitty jokes where being made assuming that the person they where with would be the only person to ever hear them.

At a conference?  Really?
Yes. They where sitting next to each other, in a crowd, that was (mostly) paying attention to the speaker. In that situation, when people talk, they talk to whoever is next to them, not to whoever happens to be around.

It's the social norm, just like facing the doors of an elevator.

They did not consent to having their pictures taken and published; and their words hearsay'd across the Internet.

From the Pycon code of conduct:

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

Also according the the Ars Technica article, she was making dick jokes on her work account twitter a few days prior.

To be clear, the guys were being stupid and were in the wrong to make those kinds of jokes in that place and time, however she WAY over escalated the situation.

...

:/

I don't understand why she didn't say "Please, cut it out," to which the response would be a realization that someone could hear and did hear, followed by a sincere apology or two... It's a payback much larger than the deed.

Edit: (unrelated) When someone starts implying ad hominum, glosses over whatever points he loses on and strawmans you, it's time to leave that discussion. -_-;

A "developer advocate", whatever that means, cost a father of three his job due to him making one of the oldest jokes in the industry.

Why, why did people have to ruin the term feminism. But then, with my gender remaining undisclosed, I'll shut up and click post.
Thank God there is a brave woman out there watching out for all us pitiful little female programmers, when the big scary men started making jokes about forking, I had to excuse myself from the room lest my pretty little brain be forever soiled.

The whole "ladies are just too delicate for the bawdy jokes that male programmers tell, so that's 100% the explanation for why more women don't enter the industry" seems pretty sexist in itself. Pretty sure if any man started a line of thought with "because women are so delicate we need to do XYZ differently", he'd be shouted down.

I know plenty of females who can tell dirty jokes, and i don't see those ones any more likely to become programmers than the demure ones.

So, the line seems to be always treat women exactly the same as men, except when they find anything and everything not to their liking, then do it how they tell you.

I can't speak for the situation being talked about because a lot depends on the context of how the joke is told but...

If a man is using bawdy jokes to intimidate or flirt with a woman in an inappropriate place, that's sexist and harassment. If she asks him to stop and he doesn't, that's sexist and harassment. If he makes a sexist joke, even if he believes in gender equality, that's sexist and can be harassment.

That men think they can get away with whatever makes women around them uncomfortable is sexist, and it's a problem in many places that geeks hold sacred.

Could have something to do with her publishing the photos of the other company's guys on the internet. A verbal joke last a second, online slander lasts forever.

She could have easily written up the article and not "named names" so to speak.

Did she have to publish the photos and "name and shame" these guys like they're convicted sex offenders?

You might have been takin' the piss with that last line but... Yeah. That's how you do it.

Treat women like men (I.E. like PEOPLE) and if they have a problem with something, apologize and stop doing it (at the very least TRY to stop). Same as if a man has a problem with something.

There are gray areas if, for instance, that "problem" is something that you can't help, or is in fact literally not wrong at all (I.E. being gay) but that's nothing to do with their gender and you can react the same way whether they're male or female or whatever.

Naw, most people haven't been discussing the article. More just comments like this:
So, the line seems to be always treat women exactly the same as men, except when they find anything and everything not to their liking, then do it how they tell you.
And a couple dozen more uncreative variants of "(modern) feminism is evil".

Her reasoning on why she didn't tell them to stop is because a last event before, she reprimanded a person who was making dirtier jokes (seriously, "dongle around my neck"? its not like he was whipping it out to blind her ::)) but said person didn't stop and defended himself so in this case she didn't bother. This didn't follow any procedure at all since she went straight to the head of the organization. It may not be cool to throw jokes around but definitely not cool to fuck someone's career over it and in case screw your's over as well for pulling the dumb move. 3 people got bitched out and 3 people lost their jobs, no ones a fucking winner. Everyone is too sensitive and everyone can't keep their mouths shut.

My dad recently started watching a lot of History Channel alien documentaries on YouTube. For anyone who doesn't know the History Channel is pretty lax with it's journalism and often misses out information in order to push a certain narrative.

He keeps starting conversations about the things he's heard and when I know about specific stories I'll fill in the gaps for him. It got to the point where he now comes and asks me to look things up for him. I have slowly got fed up with checking claims made by a known unreliable source, but it rarely takes much time.

Tonight he brought up more stories and I said I was doubtful about their truthfulness given their source and nature. He then got angry with me for ruining his fun when he is apparently "not interested in whether they are true or not" despite repeatedly asking me to find out if their claims hold any water.

I keep getting into situations like this with him on all different subjects. He asks me to find out about something, what I read doesn't tally with what he thought, and he gets upset at me claiming that I'm trying to instigate some argument with him.

In a similar recent incident he asked me my opinion on his plans for a piece of art (he often does and I don't mind one bit). I explained that I wasn't impressed and why. In response I got a load of rage about how his best friend said it was a great idea. He stewed angrily until said friend came around again and he told him, in front of me, that I didn't think it was a good idea. I explained why and his friend agreed with me. After his friend left he apologised for the previous days.

It seems that the slightest voice of descent in response to a question is unacceptable. It doesn't help that we have fairly different world views. I just wish he wouldn't ask questions he knows he won't like the answers to.

Wow, talk about being intollerant and victimizing oneself. Least she could have done is politely ask for the guys to stop joking instead of making a scene.

Anyho my sad. I have only three courses to follow this semester, wich is a shame since I'm probably one of the few here who wants to learn a damn thing instead of gaming the system and walking away with a diploma with minimal effort. No biggy I'm sure those 3 will keep me busy...not.

One course has a teacher that is completely incapable of giving a class. You could put anyone else in front of there and he'd do a better job. Never pauses after sentences turning the entire thing into one impossibley long string of words, speaks way to loud giving you a horrible headache if you're stupid enough to sit near and has no real logical structure making every single class sound like a 5 minute rush job presentation.
The other one would be fine if the teacher didn't have a chronic condition that has him call in sick more often then not. Not that I blame the man, but the school has no sort of contincy plan for this. End result? School doesn't seem to care we probably don't even get half our classes throughout the semester. This is not a new problem, gone on for at least two years now, how irrisponsible is this.
Last course I have is more of a group project thing so no real classes to follow. Only problem is one of the teachers in charge of evaluating the results of the project is completely retarded. This is an IT project, and we were expected to present some functionalities implemented so far. Problem is the bits of information we needed to actually fully implement any damn thing was given in a class one week after the presentation. This shit happens all the time to, cursed teachers need to sort their shit out.
Hell more then half the teachers in here don't seem to care when they are consistently half an hour late. I've had one who went about her two hour classes coming in half hour late, comes in leaves her stuff in the room and just goes off to do god knows what, probably have a chat over coffee with other worthless slackers. Comes back for the last half hour, gives a 15 min powerpoint and  tells everyone to make some exercices/prepare some work for next class. Every single time.

Normally stuff like this just gets me pissed of, but lately....I don't know this whole dumb school has me down, I'm so sick of their bullshit. Still I need that diploma, I just don't know how much more shit I can take.

Well damn, this thing posted when my laptop went into sleep mode as something popped up, weird. I'll edit in what I was actually typing in a bit
