What I'm referring to is a form of dementia that shows up in the last days or weeks of a person's life, rather than a long-term condition such as Alzheimer's. Past and present tend to run together as the brain weakens, and the result is a total lack of lucidity that makes contemplation of the coming departure impossible.

I was walking through campus when I noticed an odd symbol chalked onto the wall.  Two overlapping V shapes, one acute and one obtuse.  A little bit later, I saw another, and another.  Counted sixteen of them on my way from the library to the athletics building.  I was intrigued!  It was a mystery, finally, a mystery!

I googled it.  No mystery here, just viral marketing for the fucking Batman movie.  I feel betrayed.

... More Batman?  I don't think we need any more Batman right now.

Gods my mind just went horrible places. There is no way that can end well. Just... just don't. And if you do, stay away from medical records. Official paperwork in general.

Oh, nothing that serious. Just odd symbols and numbers chalked everywhere, leading to a old history book in the library with a filled out, unsent postcard in it. See if they can solve it.

I've seen a lot of Alzheimers in my family.  It's horrible for the person who has it, too.  They often get violent, because their confusion turns into frustration and anger at nothing and everything.  I think the worst part is they face the end alone, often unable to recognize more than a couple people.  I'm almost halfway to the age where it likely set in on me.  Not looking forward to it.
Yea, I guess they can turn against their family. Though my grand mother didn't seem to suffer, she was completely disconnected from the reality, even talking to her own parents, and taking people for others. It's really the moments of clarity she suffered/was afraid I think.

Walking through town, see a guy laying down at the curb. I tip my hat and bid him a good evening as a person should.

He calls out to me for help. I walk over, he's too drunk to walk more than a foot by himself, and is completely incapable of standing up.

I throw his arm around my shoulders and start walking. He repeats his name constantly (as is the wont of a drunk) and tells me to remember it, that I've always got a friend.

I lead him to his house, let him take a couple stumbles inside and decide he needs more help. Lead him to his bedroom and set him on the bed.

I retreat through the house closing all the doors and reflect on his telling that four other people didn't even bother to speak to him as he calls for help. His confession that he was considering suicide and that it was his sixth anniversary.

At times you can only hope that you helped.

It's their hosting service; Something*Positive has the same thing; they both go down every so often.
