I think the Fates might have been trying they're damndest to find me a girlfriend today, and I totally biffed it.
The story: I just got out of my somewhat-difficult logic final exam, and was standing in a stairway texting my family. Into the stairwell walks a cute girl who was in my class. She asked how I did on the test, I reciprocated, then we wished each other a good vacation and parted ways.
So I walk out to my car and prepare to drive home, when who should approach the car parked right next to mine than the same girl as before (keep in mind that the parking lots are huge and there are many of them). I was already gone though, and I figured stopping to say hi again might appear stalker-ish. No sooner had I left the parking lot did a sappy love song begin playing on the radio.
Not sure if massive coincidence or universe trolling me.
Given the universe in general, I assume Murphey's law, I.e. if you went for it, she was just being friendly and you're a stalker, but since you didn't go for it, she would have been happy to see you, and somehow would have gotten to talking and asking you out.
Given your choices, you chose the best option.
So basically the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal on a macro scale?
@ MZ: Dude, that can't be good. You okay?
Nash equilibrium. Assuming the Universe is trying to fuck you, and you are trying to advance yourself as much as possible, we can list the following posibilites, with 2 numbers. 1 is order in which you prefer, the other is order Universe prefers, 1 being best cast, 4 being worst.
You Talk to her, she likes you 1 4
You don't talk to her, she doesn't like you 2 3
You Don't talk to her, she like you 3 2
You Talk to her, she doesn't like you 4 1
Now, given this, we can say that C stands for, say, friendlyness and love, with D standing for cold and distantness.
C D
C 1,4 4,1
D 3,2 2,3
With the Y axis refering to Your choices, and the X the universes. Now, 1,4 is "Best case scenario you, worst case for universe" and so on.
Now, given that, when you cooperate, you put yourself in a position with higher possible gain, but higher possible reward. However, in this example the universe is a rational beigng dead set against you being happy, and so we can make assumptions based on it's possible behaviours. Now, the fact of the matter is, no matter what you eventually pick, regardless of your descision which it cannot influence, it, as a whole does better when she does not like you. You, knowing this, therefore whould ot set youself for a disappointment and take C. The universe, also capable of realizing this with a bit of thought, is pushed even farther into not picking C, sicne that would even Further hurt its score if it went C and helped you.
Therefore, you both, being rational thinking beings, arrive at the conpromise of you not embarresing yourself but not getting anywhere either, without ever having even communicated. As this is the Maximium you will arrive at, and the minmium the Univers will go, and since there is no reason ever to pick the other as it would only negatively impact you score.
The thinking behind this is that there is no compromise but sheer logic, because you must do what will help your score regardless of what your opponent did. It's easy to, in your case, make the universe pick C and benefit yourself, but that has no point to it nor does it follow real life. Therefore, when thinking over, you pick what will benefit you the most
regardless of you opponent's descision, which excludes ectraneous best-case scenarios. This is a Zero-sum game, with the odds against you, so your descision was completely logical and expected.
