My cat killed a bird a few months before she died. She was completely senile, could only stay awake for about half an hour at a time, hod no teeth, and had considerable loss of vision. She still took down a bird.

While it's a funny thing to joke about, cats really aren't sadistic or anything.  It is hardwired behavior, like Nadaka said.  They see anything smaller than them in motion, and their predatory instinct goes "PING!"  Instant adrenaline rush.  They do come from thousands of years of domestication for pest control, after all.  That thing where they bat around and torture their prey without killing it?  That's just how they practice.  They're studying their prey's behavior, honing their reflexes, etc.

Very true.

It's why cats chase string along with most other things you put in front of them most of the time.

That still doesn't explain why my cat Satan bit bananas. She didn't eat them, she would just bite them a few times like a little kitty vampire and then leave. It was an obsession to the point that she learned how to open cabinets while hanging from them, how to perch in those little triple-level hanging wire baskets, etc. just to do it.

But then again, sometimes tortoiseshell is all the explanation you need.

That is some adorableness.

Clearly she thought there were mice hiding in your bananas and that her teeth could coax them out.

Maybe she accidentally did the lie in wait thing by falling asleep in the sun outside, then when I bird came over to investigate her, she pounced on it and nommed it to death with her gums?

Nah. She walked out on the porch, and had a bird by the wing a few minutes later. No idea how she managed it.

I dunno about you guys, but I'd love to have a pair of retractable claws. This has nothing to do with being a furry, to be honest. Retractable claws just seem like they'd be really useful. And badass.

This. Cat claws, over each finger. Not wolverine claws, in the knuckles.

My friend had a dog once, a Pom. It once climbed a tree and ripped the throat out of a crow, and ate it.

Beware the cute ones.

Sort of ontopic, turkeys. First time I saw one it nearly chewed my leg off and now I eat turkey whenever I can to get revenge on the bastards. Claws would be badass.

If everyone had claws...
Hopefully they only grow in after age 10 or so. Toddlers would be way worse with claws.

Guh, de-clawing people?  My mind just has to think things to conclusions...
