"OH MY GOD THERE'S A GIANT SPIDER ON YOUR BACK! HOLD STILL!"

And then hit her with a broom. If nothing else, you'll make an interesting impression, right?

Yeah.

On the one hand, she's annoying and I don't like her much.

On the other, boobs.

Attraction is all in your brain. Whenever I deal with people I find physically attractive, but that I know are no good for me for whatever reason, I make an effort to link the turn-ons with the turn-offs.

In other news, there's a super-cute pretty short combat-boots-wearing girl on campus. She has a class next door that gets out at the same time as mine, but seems in a hurry to get across campus. How to contrive an excuse to chat with her that doesn't sound like the refrain from call me maybe?

...
Like this: "Hey, if I could talk to you for a moment, that would make my day. I've noticed you on campus, and I was wondering if we could hang out some time." Eye contact, but not creepy eye contact, be firm and assertive but not douchey, and take any rejection like a man.
With this line, "Well, that's okay, I kinda figured you were out of my league anyway, but I had to try. You're too beautiful to pass up."

"OH MY GOD THERE'S A GIANT SPIDER ON YOUR BACK! HOLD STILL!"

And then hit her with a broom. If nothing else, you'll make an interesting impression, right?

Damn it Yoink. +1 Internet.

I was just thinking that you should act like she dropped a pen/pencil. You'd have to sacrifice one of your own, but it might be worth it :D

When you're dealing with people who are physically attractive but not good for you, one night stands.

Do what Hans said. Honest and up front is always good, and engineering an excuse seems like it'd be prone to failure.

I know the theory well, but the practical application is a bit more difficult.

Why would you resort to pencil-dropping shenanigans when you can just go up to them and start talking? I mean, seriously.

"Oh hey, you dropped your pencil *drop*"
"The only thing I've been carrying is this pen."
"It must be magic! Wanna make out?"

I have a significant lack (near-tactless) of lack-of-confidence issues so I guess I have trouble trying to help shy people D:

No, that was awesome. :P Totally awesome.

Shouldn't encourage me, man. Otherwise what if, next time I become helplessly smitten with someone I remember this thread, and forgoe my usual awkwardness for 'armed assault via broom'? :-\ On the one hand, that'd be kinda funny. On the other hand... Just... Hm. That would be kinda funny. *Takes notes*

Serious mode, I'm not sure there's a real trick to it beyond being confident, non-threatening, and honest about your intentions. You want to go on a date with them, and are curious if they're interested. That's it. The rest is just ice breaking fluff.

But the icebreaking fluff can be a deal breaker.

I said to one of the female managers at my work the other day, "Hey, wait, you can't leave yet." 'Why?' "I haven't told you that you're beautiful yet!"
She told my mom that if I was older, her husband would have a reason to worry.
Ice breaking fluff makes a difference. :P
