So.

The last month or so of my 'merican life is slated to be cut short.
I will leave the country by about July 7~15 to head towards Korea to (a) apply for extremely high-pressure "eugo"s that might help in the area of APs, but instead cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war on my GPA*, (b) take lots of semi-private lessons on Math, History, Korean, Science, and others, (c) start a 2 year-and-a-half school life, effectively falling behind one year in my studies because of education system differences, and hopefully do well enough to enter a 'merican university.

I hate to think of all the stress... Various, miscellaneous factors make me even more apprehensive of it.

At least I get to be a Responsible Teenager and take an international flight including immigration checks by myself.

... (cries)

:(

That really sucks. I'm sorry.

IF nothing else, know you're actually getting a real education whereas most Americans just simply don't, even in college.
True speaks the true... uh. Truth. Right.

Serious condolences re: upcoming stress, though. Hope you manage to find a safe way to deguass. That's always the hardest part, really. Stress just makes it harder to learn, focus, cope... everythng, really. Finding a way to relax and staying that way does more for information retention and GPA than pretty much anything else you can do, from what I've seen.

Mind you, the studying and stuff, also important. Staying chill about things is a serious multiplier, though, and stressing just makes everything harder.

...Well, I'm not so sure about the real education part. Pretty sure America is actually slightly better than Korea on that part.

It's all clever marketing.... Most new grads I meet just simply don't get it. Honestly, many people just never do.

Skyrunner, I think you're highly overestimating your competition for getting into university. Judging by the programming thread, you have, and are continuing to get, a pretty good amount of experience with multiple programming languages, including C++. That alone would put you in the top of the group of incoming students in a CS/SE or related program. And while it will probably change in a few years, I think it's safe to say most high schools in the US don't even offer programming courses at this point. Most incoming students' knowledge in that area is confined to java or a simple scripting language, assuming they even know anything at all (and many don't).

And make sure to advertise your self-initiative on your application. That is, quite seriously, something colleges love - it is a very convincing extracurricular when you're actually building real things you can show off to them.

If you're really worried, I imagine getting in contact with some of the teachers in your hoped for field at the school would probably be rewarding, at least. Not sure if they have any pull with admissions, but even if not, it probably won't be a wasted attempt.

Thanks for the kind words alway  :)
But I don't really know multiple languages :P I know C++, and sorta kinda know C# because *cough* it's a rip-off of C++ that was dragged into a dark alleyway by the .NET thugs and beaten into (some people assert) better shape.
And Java, all I know is that Eclipse hates me. >.> Hmph, well I hate you too, Eclipse! Cruddy font and bad UI!
I couldn't even get GCircle circle = new GCircle(parameters) to work <.< (I know it's not the right syntax :P)
Maybe someday I'll try a new language. o_O

Huh... Extracurricular. I guess this could be said as that as much as say sports teams or club membership, if only on a single person basis.

As for a school, I haven't got any idea of which I want to apply for.

I looked up what an "Open Relationship" is because I had heard it but honestly didn't know what it was. I think it just goes to show how either naive or internally old I am that I find this reprehensible. I can't help but feel that it speaks of our era of selfish indulgence, arrogance, and excess in egotism that this is even a thing, and made doubly unforgivable that it is given such a sterile name.

I do sometimes feel I should have been born in a different time and place. That I'm just not cut out for the culture present in people my own age.

Being a free love person myself, what do you find so reprehensible about it? I find monogamous relationships to be "selfish," as they're claiming ownership over each other (though if it's mutual I see no actual problem with a monogamous relationship).

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I think it's more a case of refusing to accept standards that aren't his own. I'm personally someone that gets into open relationships or nothing myself. I've tried keeping myself to one person, but I'm just not that kind of person when it comes to relationships of any kind.

It's hard for me to articulate, as it's something I'm still grasping, but yeah, I suppose it's because it runs against my long held views of how relationships worked. It's another aspect to society that muddles my understanding of how affection and intimacy operates, and in a weird way that angers me intensely.

I'm just a sorry idiot, I feel.

I don't see anything wrong with open relationships, but I have no idea how they can ever practically function and not suffer collapse. I guess that's just a side effect of having a monogamous mindset, though.

Still, I find it interesting from a sociological standpoint that open relationships and the like appear to be quickly growing in popularity amongst the general populace, relatively speaking. A side effect of the ongoing death of marriage as a social institution, perhaps?

You're occasionally angered and bemused by love?

Nah, you're just human.
