I've never really wrestled competitively, though I have fought my brother many a time before. People who are 173cm (5'8") tall and weigh 54.5kg (120lbs) do not do well. I've done some kendo, though, and that went pretty well. I'm more successful there because it's less about strength and more about sheer ferocity and speed. (Well, when I do it. It probably just freaks my friends out and they forget to block or something.) Also, dodging is easy when you are a narrow target. (Which doesn't work in a grabby contact match like wrestling.)

I'm 5'11.

How do you think I feel when I stand next to my dad's family, who dwarf me by comparison...?

My great-grandfather before he died was 6'4".
His daughter, my paternal grandmother, is 6'4".
Her husband, my paternal grandfather, is 6'5".
My dad is 6'6".
My uncle is 6'6".
My youngest aunt is 6'4".
My middle aunt is 6'3".
My eldest aunt is 6'2".
My twin cousins, children of the eldest aunt are both 6'4" and they're built like (this is an australianism, bear with me) brick shithouses.
A younger cousin, who is 13 (six, nearly seven years younger than me) is 6'3".

Usually it's my shoulders, actually. I'm an extraordinarily broad person.

I was pretty good.  My first two years, I was on a horrible team with worthless coaches that just didn't teach me much.  My last two years, I was on an amazing team with every single varsity competitor being at least a sectional champion, and about half the team competing at state and semi-state levels.

IIRC, our 145 was a state champion and 160 was state runner-up.  Our 152 and 171 were semi-state competitors.  I could wrestle with those guys and give them a good workout.  I could even win on rare occasion if I was at my best and they were having a bad day.  Ultimately, they were still better than me, so I never got to wrestle varsity level.  If I had, I would have had a good shot at being regional champ and then probably got my ass kicked at semi-state.  If I had started my wrestling career at that school, I probably would have been a state level competitor.

But I had to settle for being undefeated my senior year as JV.

Well, I didn't spend that long wrestling, and I only ever medaled in state once (bronze, at 83 lbs. Got screwed because the ref was my opponent's uncle.  ::)) However, I've been grappling for quite some time. I'm not into jujitsu yet, but someday I'll get there.

I always had good fun watching the low weights at tournaments.  Below 120 lbs, there are so few competitors.  Half of their brackets were free passes.  Sometimes they'd only have to wrestle two matches in a day, while the rest of the team has five or six.  Big rounds of applause every time they got to walk out onto the mat just to have the referee raise their arm and send them back :P
