"if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

This phrase has always bugged me with its sheer implausibility. It's a forest. There'll be something around to hear it. Birds. Rodents. Spiders and beetles will feel the vibrations.
To the insects living inside the tree, the entire world will have moved.

Anthropocentrism makes me sad every day.

I extend my philosophy to said birds, rodents, spiders, and beetles too. If they hear it, then the concept of sound exists in that situation and has "value."

I'm not so much a humanist as a... lifeist? Living and experiencing things is cool, period :P

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Welp. Can't ignore a sign like that. Let the mind-meld begi- Wait. I don't actually think those are possible. Also gross violations of privacy and personal sovereignty and all that, I guess. And great distance, if you want to get technical. Which seems like a silly thing to do about something fictional with ill-defined rules. Honestly, I don't know why you even brought this up, self.

I'd be okay with mind melding with Vector, but I'd be afraid of dragging her down.

The answer is that the tree would produce vibrations in the air, but not sound. It only become sound when heard.

Something reminded me of Border Guard today so I went over to Dice Station Zero to read all the updates that were promised to have started in August, but alas, no post or even announcements. He hasn't even been online since the last announcement that it would pick back up in August.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
To give this image a little more context we don't have enough seats for all the TDs elected.
TDs are paid as full time job with many benifits and here only about four of them turn up to debate this

Yeah, it happens a lot elsewhere, too. The system is broken. Election lists should be open, and these tool's priviledges and salaries should be cut down heavily. They keep saying (everywhere) that we must pay our politicans well because otherwise we won't get competent people with educations willing to take the place. But the way things are they're a bunch of incompetents who don't know anything about anything, whose only talents are brown-nosing their way to the top and talking a lot without saying anything, and who use their position for their own benefit.

In an ideal world, our politicians would come from a healthy mix of scientific, engineering, medical, legal and financial backgrounds.
Sadly many of these people are too busy making real contributions to society to play the game.

Been having a strong desire to burn ALL the bridges. Just obliterate my ties to all my various RL friends and former friends and people who knew me, and just move on to something else. Unfortunately, having a family kind of makes that difficult.

I seriously might nuke my Facebook account though. It's bad when I don't even give a shit what my "closest" RL friends (whom I see or talk with maybe once a month or so now) are up to.

Erase them from your account instead.

If someone has failed to reply to my messages in a while, I usually end up purguing them them from my friend list. What's the point of having silent gossipers on Fb anyway?

My car wasn't running cleanly this morning... This will affect its resale value.

It's not that they're failing to reply, because I don't really make many messages to begin with. And if I erased them, then there'd pretty much be no point to maintaining an account.

I guess it's just a sign of how disconnected I feel from my "old" life.

Same old same old from me, just when I'm feeling confident in my abilities I get a problem that makes absolutely no sense, and defies all my attempts to fix it.

Blargh.
