Just learned recently that Food Lion is closing all stores in Florida. Which means, outside of one of the stores being closer to home closing down, everyone that I knew that worked there (my last job before I started freelancing) as well are going to be laid off. That sucks.

What makes things even worse is that regardless of the store being the highest scoring of the region, it's still closing down. I know of a good chunk of people that are going to be rather pissed off once they get wind of it.

EDIT:
It's odd, now I come and realize it, how most jobs I worked at/with end up becoming worse off after I leave them. It's like I know just the right amount of time to work somewhere, and the right time to depart, before something inexplicably goes to hell with them. I think I'm a black cat to businesses; except I'm a lucky charm as long as I'm with them, not so much after I'm gone.

Hurrrrrgh, retirement plan information. Stupid dense economese. Oh, well. I will read this damn thing, and I will understand it before I do anything with it. In related news, I probably won't be doing anything else productive today.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Not so much sad as paranoid and itchy all over...

I just went to my first parasitology lab. The course itself is fascinating and awesome but after the first 5 minutes in the lab I already feel like everything I touch/am touched by is contaminated and contagious forever. The fact that they make a big deal about not letting your belongings touch the floor and tables really doesn't help.
I'm not sure I have the right kind of mindset to deal with this.  :(

Basically everyone in the programming thread, even Aqizzar, who just started, is a better programmer than me in every way that matters. :(

Except me, Glyph. :P

Anyway, I went to see a spinal specialist today. He basically says that the Spina Bifida Occulta is no big deal and doesn't explain my pain, and looks over my MRIs and whatnot. I then hear him say, "How the hell did they miss that?" He shows me a model of a spine, and tells me that there's a partition between the front part of the spine (which houses the main nerves) and the back part (which houses the connections to the limbs). He shows me a picture of one of mine (via an old MRI), stating that a normal one should be a thin plate, and that mine "has been utterly annihilated." It looks like there's a fine coating of dust where there should be a bone.

So, there are two options: A) Do "aggressive" physical therapy to strengthen my core and get my pain to manageable levels, and if that doesn't work B) have large scale surgery to fuse my spine together in hopes that the pieces stop grinding against one another and falling out of place. Oh, and I'd have to have option B done every 20 years or so, because it places strain on the piece above it and wears it out much faster than it should.

...hooray!

The thread kind of makes me feel inadequate too.  In my case though, I think it's mostly because I feel like I don't know enough programming languages.  I know C/C++ pretty proficiently, but even Java and C# I have so little experience with I might as well claim no knowledge of them.

I feel confident in my ability to learn them if I ever cared to, but so far I haven't felt the need.

I get the impression from many other programmers that there are a lot of other languages I should know well, but don't.  Ruby, Java and Python all jump to mind.  I see them mentioned pretty much every where, but Java is the only one I've ever really even touched... bleh.

As it sits...I'm not even sure what I need to learn to be effective. I've been through a semester of C++ and VB each, but I don't really feel like I learned anything useful.

I feel your pain. I did some programming in high school, and considered myself to be pretty good. Then I stop for a few years as reality kicks in, and now everywhere I look people are cranking out amazing things in just a few hours. It's quite a blow to the old self-esteem.

Programming's one of those things you have to keep doing to stay really good at. I gave up on c++ for like, 3 years, and when I came back to it I had to relearn a crapload of stuff.

I look back at some of my ancient code and well... it's a good thing I relearned some stuff. I had some wacky implementations back then.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Good to hear. I'm sure Death is happy with this arrangement too, what with not having to fight you for a good 60-70 years yet.  :P

Deep tissue damage is a bitch like that. I've caused an acute deep soft tissue injury to my foot once. It hurt to even touch the foot against anything.
