No, it's because someone who lifts a character to the point of any sort of recognition (rather than anything else they possibly might have lifted) automatically is completely non-creative.

*shrug*

I'm not sure how I feel about a lot of this stuff, but acting like there's a big break the moment one has a single recognizable character seems odd to me.

I like believable fanfic that can be easily accommodated by the existing mythos. I've written a few fanfics in various universes upon request: Back when I played Runescape i did, as well as when I was playing World of Warcraft... NEVER AGAIN

Isn't that the whole point of decent fanfic?

I liked The Last Ringbearer, and it was undeniably LOTR fanfic.

I think the problem lies in the fact that there's a lot of it, and no easy way to tell the good writers from the Peter Chimeras before reading the story.

TBH I don't even think that there are many Peter Chimeras. I suspect the average fanfic piece is kind of like the average bestseller: bland and repetitive. Why this is tollerable when Tom Clancy does it, but not when John Doe uploads it to his blog, is a good question which is best left to the reader's discrection.

Not always! Sometimes it's about seeing how the existing mythos breaks.

Then there's crackfics. Even the ones that don't really fit the mythos can be* pretty decent. By which I mean hilarious, of course.

Then there's the stuff that's only borrowing the name and possibly the appearance/general character of some of the characters. You wonder why they didn't just shift a few names around with those, but they can be* pretty good, if you ignore the connection to canon.

Yes. Sturgeon's Law and all. Thank you for clarifying the previous points, as I'm not usually much for fanfiction.

Hey now, stuff by Peter Chimera and the like is still good, just in an ironically bad way. Sort of a So Bad It's Good kind of thing.

All this talk of art has made me feel insecure about my own doodlings.  They aren't bad, but it's also been at least 3 years since I tried seriously to draw anything whatsoever, which is terrible for self-confidence.

*sigh*

Well, regular water hasn't helped, but I'll give it a shot.

If that doesn't work, try blowing your nose really hard. The way the sinuses are connected is...well...I probably wouldn't have designed it that way. :P

I find a gargle made up of warm-to-hot water with added salt and lemon juice/vinegar works best for me. I'm not sure what increasing the acidity of the mixture does, but it seems to help for me.

Though I tend to like the taste of sour things to begin with, so...

Afaik, it shouldn't be the acidity that does it, but the viscosity of the mix. Hmm...
