How do you restrain yourself from saying, "You know, [client], you're making it really hard for me to want to defend you. If your behavior continues, I may require additional vespene gas pylons compensation."? I mean, if I was treated like that on a job site, I'd happily pack my stuff and go, "Welp, looks like you want to fix your own computer. Have a nice life."
Because unfortunately, Truean is a lawyer with a soul.

I know, but there's only so much a person can take, and a professional should only have to take so much before a job just isn't worth it.

First it was vampires with a soul that got popular after Buffy/Angel, now lawyers have them too? J/K!

hehe, nice. Also thank you. I'm pretty sure a prerequisite to entering law school is having a soulectomy, whereby the soul is removed.

Seems the surgeon on my soulectomy wasn't thorough? Medical Malpractice or excellent result?

:P

As for clients, yes, they are nuts. They want everything, now and to pay for none of it, ever.

How do you restrain yourself from saying, "You know, [client], you're making it really hard for me to want to defend you. I'd have to say the (small amount of) money. You see, the (small amount of) money is better than no money. Also I've come to the conclusion that most people are quite insane. Thus, there's really no one better out there. The rich and poor are equivalently crazy, just in different ways.

If only I were a heartless bitch, then I could make so much more money. :) :P

Do you suppose your demographic of clients is tilted because of your job, or are people really just that evil?

Yeah, it's amazing how different people see the world because of their jobs. My mom writes government proposals for companies and thus mainly spends time with cutthroat, lazy, incompetent assholes who happen to be conservative. (Not trying to be political, I'm just saying that she works with business executives who tend to have these traits.) She absolutely hates people. Her license plate is a variant of "People are bad, terrible people" or something to that effect.

I go to a college in a city and I volunteer at a hospital. Thus from where I am I think most people are liberal, friendly, and intelligent. There are a million differences in the way we see the world because of how our daily experiences differ, and we all need to keep this in mind if we hate where we are, or try and forget it if we like where we are. It helps one's sanity you see :p. Seems like people that need a criminal lawyer (not sure what you're supposed to call it since that makes you sound like a felon. A criminal law specialist? A Criminal Law-yer?) would be as a whole less savory than those that don't. Sure not all of them are, but it's a lot like saying that people who go to a doctor usually have a health problem or people who see a psychiatrist are more likely to have issues with psychiatric health that they are looking for help with.

We're not all crazy... well we're definately not all BAD. Crazy maybe.

[Disclaimer, I do not seek or take cases online, ever, under any circumstances. This is not an advertisement for services. If you require legal assistance, please contact an attorney licensed to practice in your jurisdiction].

O I've been called a criminal lawyer plenty of times. :P

I suppose the polite term for that is "Criminal Defense Attorney," though I really don't remember the last time someone was polite about it, or let myself notice that anymore.

I'm basically a general practitioner/mutt. I also practice in many areas of law from Criminal, Family, Juvenile, Small Business, Corporate, Estates planning, Probate, Administrative, regulative, federal practice, Personal Injury, Civil, Contract, Appellate, Litigation, etc,  and am not a "specialist" (interestingly, you can't call yourself a "specialist" in an area of law until and unless the Supreme Court or governing body of your state certifies you as such. Thus my old boss who had been practicing real estate law so long we stopped counting at 30 years was not "technically" a "specialist....").

I fully stipulate and admit my job colors my worldview. I also say it is not just the criminal portion of my practice that does so. People will fight over money, a lot. I personally am jaded to such an extent as to invoke wonder that my skin is not green. Thus, please excuse me if nothing you can ever say will likely reduce said jadedness. Honest apologies.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

He who fights monsters is undeniably epic? Or the other one? Because I think it's more flattering to be called epic.

And Truean, try to watch what your work does to you. Sure you're always going to have your judgement coloured by what you experience on a day-to-day basis. Sure, your work is almost certainly a day-to-day thing and thus colours your judgement. But it doesn't have to take over your life. I'm not saying it has with you, hell I just came down from the other boards yesterday so I can't quite claim to know anyone (as much as you can know anyone online), but my uncle has been practicing copyright law in Hong Kong for nearly a quarter century now. He has a long term girlfriend but can't commit to marrying her because he's terrified she's going to ruin him and take all his money. He hasn't seen my immediate family in half a decade, and his mother who was diagnosed with cancer (that was later thankfully, successfully treated) didn't get more than one call from him. Now I can't possibly guess with any real certainty the reason he distrusts and keeps his distance from people, but the fact that he's been slowly getting more and more detached over the years and that he works in a field and area (it might just be the area) where people are ruthless in their dealings with each other makes me think that it may be his work. Whew, another family sob story, but this time incorporating advice!

Also, have you dealt with any weird/hilarious cases or have you seen anything in your work that might have been funny? That might cheer people up. I know you can't give details but I don't know how encompassing those restrictions are. I know for HIPAA I'm fine to say "I saw someone with a gunshot wound to the head" but I can't say "I saw a man/woman age X with white/blonde/brown hair come in on Friday the X with such and such wound"

[offers hug to M.o.M.]

I thought it was, "he who fights monsters should take care not to become one himself," or something roughly along those lines.

Thanks though Shinotsa. I try to , and sometimes even do, manage some of that. Work also provides a thing to get lots in rather than focus on the other stuff in my life that I'd rather not focus on. :)

Considering leaving this law library, which I have spent yet another night in.

I've pretty much stopped posting here. It started during soccer season when I was looking for something to have to tack on a resume, but I found out that soccer is actually really fun and I enjoyed it a lot, so I had a lot less free time. When the season was over, I started regularly checking bay12, but not posting. I don't know why, but I sort of feel like an outsider or something. It's weird, I sorta feel like I have nothing to contribute. And after soccer season, I hooked up with Academic Bowl, which is basically Barbarossa's knowledge bowl thing, but it's a different name. And there I realized who I was talking to. People who were on the internet regularly. People who, if Academic Bowl wasn't going, would ride the bus home or drive and then immerse themselves in the same kind of stuff I did. And then I realized how I kinda missed that. That this whole I'm-going-to-be-popular-becuase-I-can shit is counter-active to my own interest. It's basically a game to me, and if I really wanted to I could change my appearance because that's pretty much what I actually feel like. And it felt shitty to immediately think "people will dislike me" and that I would have no chance of getting a girlfriend. Those were my two thoughts.
