An hour until my math midterm. I'm looking over this review sheet and I don't even know what to think. I'm tired, I'm hungry and am in no state to take something this important.

With math, slow and steady wins the race.  Break it down, always break it down, and go with what you know.  And take a calculator, whether or not you're supposed to.

I'm doing structured procrastination!

Why is this in the sad thread? 'Cause I'm likely ruining my A in art. Oh well.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Did terribly on my problem set, did even worse on the midterm.  Disaaaaaster.

I'm going to keep posting here to vent, because I gotta keep going, man, gotta keep going.  But I don't have the energy to do it silently.

Oh my god this place is so fucked up.  There are some seriously disturbed people working here.  Just sat through a meeting where our manager had to explain to us that it's improper to poop on the floor, because yesterday someone did just that... and then stepped in it and tracked it all over the office.  We've had problems with people wiping snot on the walls and peeing on the floor next to the toilet (not just missing a little bit but making large puddles).  This is a new low.  I'm just speechless.

This isn't the type of job where you'd expect this kind of thing, either.  They aren't hiring kids straight out of high school or random people off the street.  They mostly only hire college graduates, and turn away dozens of people from every opening.  Most of the people here are in the 30-50 age range.  I think this type of work just causes mental problems.

I work for a major customs broker doing basically data entry.  I take bits of information from shipping documents and organize them into another standardized document to streamline the clearance process and make customs officer's lives easier.  I have to know a ton of specialized knowledge to do this efficiently.  For instance, I could classify almost anything through the Harmonized Tariff Schedule in a few seconds or even off the top of my head, and list off tons of bizarre rules that apply to certain types of commodities regarding their importation.  But still... I basically copy information from one document into another.  It's the dullest thing imagineable, and my office is dominated by 3 of the most obsessive control freaks I've ever known in my life.  If I don't interrupt my work regularly with stuff like this forum (which I can get in serious trouble for if the wrong people see me doing it), I go into this sort of catatonic state that I call an existential coma.

Back at university there was a guy  at the dorm who masturbated in public compulsively. He was studying law, I think. We called him "The Cannibal"

The moral of the story is that the fact that they're college graduates does not necessarily make them sane

... but how does someone like that manage to graduate, without getting their compulsion under control?  Does not compute!

I don't think the work is causing the problem.  Often times, aptitude for that kind of work coincides with things like Asperger syndrome, or OCPD.  Employers that require that sort of work consider it an advantage to have such employees because they're so productive.

Surprisingly enough, Asperger's Syndrome will not cause you to shit on the floor.

Yeah... my brother has Asperger's.  Never prevented him from learning to us a toilet.

There aren't many people here who I would suspect as having that kind of condition, anyway.  When I say mental problems, I mean personality disorder.  This type of work seems to emotionally warp people.  Almost everyone who has been doing this for 10+ years is petty, bitter, and mischievous.  I've been here 5 years, and have noticed myself slipping in that direction at times.

Nice try :P     It happened when I wasn't here.
