The goal of a university education is not to learn everything you need to know, but to learn how to learn everything you need to know.

Besides, if I may be so blunt, it seems to me that you like feeling inadequate a little bit too much. Have you considered taking life as it comes and learning for the sake of learning instead of some ill-defined doom visions?

Was the 2nd part directed at me?

If so, all I meant by it is basically what you said in your first sentence.  If you went to school for a few years to learn how to do a job, just so you could spend the rest of your life applying the knowledge you gained in that tiny portion of your lifetime... that would just be sad.  It should supply you with a broader worldview, better critical thinking and problem solving skills, and general preparation to be a lifelong learner.  Part of that is being humbled -- the realization that the answer to one question usually raises others and that's been the nature of discovery throughout human history.  If you come away from it thinking that the learning stage of your life is over with... then education has failed you.

Oh, I dunno.  I'm changing.

I no longer look at B's as the scourge of me, or anything like that.  I made a lot of mistakes at the beginning of this semester that make it much harder to succeed now.  And so, I need to live with them.  Trying overly hard to compensate for them is kind of foolish.  You have to go along and get what you can get, not spend sleepless night after night just forgetting everything you learn.  Or at least, I can't remember a damned thing without sleep.

It's just dawning me that I'm about to be 5/8 done with my college career, and I still feel like I know nothing.
Aw, hell, you have already learned everything I have to teach before I ever got a chance to teach it! Maaaan, now how will I make myself feel important. Hrm. I will hold the world hostage in a roleplaying game, there we go. Anyway, you learn all the really good stuff in the last year and a half (I can say this definitively because my study shows that this is 100% true, sample size of 1 be damned), and even so it's still just enough to make you go "Oh, wow, there is so much to learn and I didn't even know that I wanted to know it!"

Anyway, that post I quoted sounds like a series of good things, so w00t for that.

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It's not doom and gloom, Virex.  I'm just thinking aloud.  I spent a very, very long time hardly thinking at all, and so now it's time to really think.  To change, and all that.

I'm trying to no longer think in terms of what I expect from the world, but in terms of what I owe.  And all I owe, really, is as much as anyone else owes: to be reasonable, to be diligent, to be good, to be kind, to be honorable, to be glad for what you have (though that doesn't mean you can't hope for more).  None of those things need make you famous.  You can just run a corner store and do those things forever.  I could be happy teaching math in high school for the rest of my life.  "Female teachers scared of math?"  Yeah, those nay-sayers can eat it.  There's nothing to be frightened of.  Only yourself.  It's a spiritual endeavor, and that's why so many people find it so damned hard.  It's not really about what you produce.  Success is continuing to try.

I dunno.

You see, this was something I used to have, so many years ago, but it slowly died.  And now it's here again.

Just watched the latest Derren Brown programme called Derren Brown: The Experiments: The Assassin. There is a trailer for anyone who wants the gist. You can also see the whole episode on 4od, completely legally no less.

The programme was interesting, usual Derren Brown fare, but one thing irritated me. Part way through they use a polygraph / lie detector. Polygraphy is regarded as a pseudoscience with little to no validity. Anyone interested in the things Derren Brown claims to be should know this. I dislike that their use is being advertised as reliable like this.

I suppose it made me more disappointed than sad but with still a tinge of sadness. Looking back over the last few posts I realise this sadness is nothing much :P.

My sister came home and I told her the homestuck EoA5 flash was out and I wanted to see it with her. She liked the idea and agreed. After dinner in full view of her i told my mother not to disturb us and she could use the computer after, as I like to get immersed in this thing. I specifically said I don't really want to hear people talking during this.

So we sit down and the flash starts and we are both silent and appreciating it when my mother calls down about some stuff that can wait. I lightly snapped back some quick responses and my sister inquired why I sounded frustrated. I explained again that I don't really want to hear people talking during the flash.

So she begins talking about what is happening and uses nonsense phrases that have no point, saying what is happening on the screen and joking about serious parts. I snap at her explaining this again. She gets super pissed off and just leaves. Dammit I want to watch this with you and discuss it after it finishes. You were perfectly aware of this and chose to speak anyway. You got indignant that you violated the rules I provides for this exchange.

Derren Brown did lose quite a bit of credibility for me with his "predict the lottery numbers" trick.  Since he was clearly lying about the method he used for that one (or was mistaken and got very lucky).

Hmm, I have so little free time lately. Between a volunteer project, family coming out to visit, and school getting more difficult at an alarming rate, I just have so little time for everything else, or I end up staying up late and then falling asleep in school.

Yesterday my third fortune cookie told me today was supposed to be a productive day.

So my mother suddenly decided she wanted me to come off my meds, without me actually telling her I wanted to, but I'm alright with that since it saves me a confrontation. She insisted I talk to my psychiatrist about it at my appointment today. Which I attended alone since my father had a dental emergency.
When I spoke to him about it he was naturally very reluctant to drop them too much, so the invega got cut in half, the adderall will be phased out, but the lamotigine will stay at 250mg.
I had an appointment directly afterwards with my therapist next door, she sticks closer to her schedule, as opposed to my psychiatrist who tends to run 15-30 minutes late. So he was able to go next door and spend five minutes talking to my therapist, after which we wrapped up and I went to see her.

She wound up encouraging me to talk to my old friends, sometimes I think people just take what I say and go in the opposite direction. She said I should take some time to get the right attitude and approach them. To some degree she does talk some sense. I spend large quantities of energy trying to think about something else and trying to stop myself using it as a means to beat myself up.
But they want nothing to do with me, and I deserve it. They shouldn't have to deal with me because of my pathetic little issues.
Besides, I highly doubt anything will come of it. The last few times I've tried bridging the gap just left me with a greater confidence that I fucked up bad.

That's true enough; I had forgotten all about that. I personally think he demonstrated his technique in the adverts for the programme. It must be the entertainer in him showing through...

It's only partially because I'm a fan. I established numerous times that I don't want disturbances while watching this. the second reminder causing her to decide "Huh, seems he gets really pissed when you talk during this. I had better say all the words now."

She has a consistent habit of pushing buttons and questioning why you are angry and calling you pathetic for it and how she is the victim there. It's been going on for years and I can't put up with that bullshit anymore.

Firefox is becoming nearly unusable due to constant random freezes. Roughly every 5-10 mintes, Firefox will lock up completely for thirty to sixty secodns.

Okay, I'm kind of zeroing in on this one, but bear with me.

In a roundabout way, you're completely right, but it's not for the reasons you went on to say. If they really want nothing to do with you because of your problems, then I'd say you deserve better. I don't know the extent of your trouble. And, to be honest, I don't know your friends, so let me be clear that I don't necessarily mean to blame them. But I can say with certainty that you don't deserve to be abandoned because you are already hurting.
