Why, why, why didn't I stay in fucking engineering?  Then I'd have a promise of a good job with mucho dinero in a year and a half, rather than the "work constantly until you're 45 if you even want to think about tenure" clusterfuck I'm currently sitting in.

If I recall correctly, you're a mathematics major, right?

My computer has gone and died on me. I'm now in the process of sending the PSU back the the manufacturers. The problem is that they are in Germany and that it could take up to 12 days after it arrives and then more to get it back. I might buy a replacement to get things working ASAP. I have a nice long weekend off and now this; The computer and I had plans this weekend too.

I can sell you a new one, if you like. :P

Not a. The mathematics major. All of them.

My 2TB drive with all my shit on it died. I've currently got everything on my two 1TB drives. They were the backup of my 2TB drive, meaning I only have one copy of everything now. I hear Western Digital offer a service where they send a new drive without you sending your dead one first, hopefully I can do that. I don't want to be sitting here nervous without a backup for long.

Yes, that's correct.  I'm a student in pure math with a steadily enlarging frontal lobe.  Who said brow ridges were atavistic and non-sexy?  Not me!

What's the plan on future profession? Going for a purely scholastic field like math with an advanced degree often does lead up exactly to becoming a professor fighting for tenure and going about their daily business struggling with/against students and workplace politics, but then again lots of jobs have workplace politics.

Getting a job as an engineer surely seems like it has more promise early on in terms of getting a good salary, but at the end of the day I don't think it'll ever feel like less work, just different work.

EDIT:

Tehc, I don't know why you're nervous; you should feel impressed with yourself. Lots of people have no backup, and die inside when their computer dies. You have the backup, and it worked out for you. One copy of everything is exactly what most people have. Whenever you get that extra drive again, you'll be as set as a kettle (I have no idea if I just made that phrase up). It's a fairly low chance that you'll lose the same data twice before you can get the new backup drive.

What with the major flood in Thailand - and Western Digital's factories being located in the affected area - a replacement may take longer to arrive than you think. Until then, you'll probably want to look into some online backup services for you most essential files - such as Dropbox, if you don't use it already, or Google Docs/Files.

That being said, I envy your massive storage capabilities as well as your futureproofing.

Engineering is not likely to be less work than working at an university, but the pay can be a lot better. Entry-level salary for chemical engineers with a masters degree in northwest Europe is usually around 50K euros per year, which is probably a bit more then what a university is going to offer you...
