Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Buyer Beware:  If you don't live in a desert, don't get dsl.  Shitty copper wires mean when it rains you may as well not have internet.

It's been raining for like a week straight and I'm starting to fucking rage.

I managed to studiously avoid so much as seeing Angry Birds until the fad was as played out as it's going to get.  I figured I could live my life totally free of ever giving a crap about it, much less knowing anything about it.

I was wrong.

Goddammit, it's a good game.

Is it any better than the dozens of other games like it? Such as Crush the Castle, which it is a ripoff of?

I don't like Angry Birds, but I don't think its a bad game mechanics wise. Its just boring because it's been done before, so many god damn times.

A little extra polish... just the right image, marketing, & timing, plus a little pure luck internet virility...

Yeah, I think one of the main reasons Angry Birds got so popular was because it went on sale at the right moment.

Watching a friend go through some of the shit I endured when I dated, i.e., not feeling pretty enough.  In this case, I'm guessing it's that the boyfriend doesn't take photos of her (his hobby is classy photography), but will take pictures of other people... I felt the same way, but what was an insult to me back then ("You don't feel beautiful and people don't take pictures?  They should see you when you're doing mathematics") has evolved into a gift.  I don't know that she'll have the same sort of experience.

I guess she'll probably be okay, but this is making me feel lonely and long for graduate school, when I will have a stipend and possibly the ability to trawl the globe looking for adorable mathematicians =/  Also, the day when she can either be broken up or safely married and living in Korea, so I won't have to worry about this particular thing anymore.

Longing to feel physically beautiful in a relationship has always seemed troublesome to me.

Yeah, people ought to find someone that makes them feel wonderful.

Don't feel lonely though, there's tons of people who would enjoy hanging out with you, Vector. You just have to go out and meet them. That being said, I'll be around campus next weekend so PM going your way!

I'm feeling slightly better. It's a strange feeling, a mental sludge permeating my thoughts, as though I've irrevocably lost something important and I can't remember just what it is... I know it's just happiness and brain chemicals. I really loathe these low ends of the cycle.

Oh, it's not that I feel lonely, haha.  I feel truly engaged and appreciated for the first time in my life.  I have more than enough friends.  And, for once, I actually have connections that other people can find useful and valuable.  Suddenly, I'm ensconced in a group of people, in which I am both needed and useful.

But dating feels like it should wait another couple of years, while I grow up some more.  I am not yet ready to start seriously hunting, though I'm looking forward to it!

Yeah, bah... our culture puts a lot of pressure on women to "look good", as though that was the one achievement that marks a woman's success, or can secure their acceptance in society. Though it certainly applies to men too, there's a long-standing tradition of men who don't/don't have to care about their appearances.

It's a stupid, ugly cultural thing, but it's rooted in deep. Probably going to take a few more generations before we can deconstruct that monster.

I can't wait for the day that we see people for their achievements, and the content of their character. Seems like it'd breed a much healthier attitude, pushing people to address a lack of achieving what they want to, rather than pushing them to shed pounds, build muscle, or otherwise change the appearance of their bodies.

I don't think I'll ever be able to have a relationship with anybody besides just "hey let's talk about nothing".  I have a hard time enjoying drama or anything serious with social interaction and I just wouldn't be interested enough to get involved with the he-said she-said because frankly and tactlessly I don't care.

My parents seem to love drama though.
