So I got the farthest and best character I've ever had in Nethack, right? I was actually hoping I'd win this time.

Of course, I mostly expected to die in some stupid way...
but instead I get an error about being unable to uncompress the file.

The dreaded system error is the worst enemy.

Had to explain to my sister that

2x^2=2*x^2 NOT 4x^2
AND
(2x^2)*(2x^2)=4x^2

Kids these days...  :-\

The problem is that they don't put enough emphasis on order of operations anymore, as part of the "intuitive" style of math instruction.

I finished Stick RPG 2 in one day... Now I feel REALLY sorry for those who wasted their cash on it.

Sadness and thoughts of death never go well together. Sadness sucks.

They did when I was taught. Although I did go to an alternative school...
I was taught PEMDAS: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.
Now they have GEMS, I can't remember what the G stands for, but they condensed Multiplication and division into one step, and did the same with Subtraction and addition.
The only problem is, if you've got 5-2+3, how do you know which one to do first? If you do it one way, it's 6, if you do it the other way it's 0. Technically, according to PEMDAS, 0 is correct. However, according to GEMS, either one could be correct because it doesn't tell you which order to do them in, just that you do them after everything else, and if you want to get really technical, you can say that since subtraction is listed first, it's 6.
I don't know, I think the old way was better.

Wait, I always learned PEMDAS, but that the MD and AS were together, and you do them left to right.
... I really hope I wasn't wrong all this time.  :-X

5-2=3+3=6. From left to right. That's because PEMDAS is bullshit (edit: okay, maybe not bullshit, but extremely misleading) since multiplication and addition don't have priority before divisions and substractions respectively.

The Germans have the simple to remember phrase "Punkt vor Strich", meaning dots before lines, * and : before + and -.

No, you were quite right about that.

God damn it, every time I talk about math here, I'm always wrong. Thanks, alternative school...
