It's so hard to resist posting in there. I'm trying though, I am. The whole thing is just too hilarious and horrible.

Vector, they're trolling. There is not and has never been a serious troll. Rousing people to anger is the objective of such inflamatory comments.
There haven't been serious trolls, but there have certainly been people who genuinely hold stupid, inflammatory views.  I don't see any reason to think these are trolls.
I'm looking at the way they're typing and responding, just the style of it, and it sets off my Trolldar. It reminds me of stealth trolling, and as such I am trying to bring up that possibility to everyone else.

Stealth trolling tends to involve stealth rather than idiot sexism.  If it's trolling, it's trolling by idiots.

What I mean by "stealth trolling" is their clearly weak attempts to justify the initally explicit troll comments. It's an attempt to extend the argument without getting called out. I never said it was a good strategy, but there you go.

It's the internet. Near-zero accountability + anonymity = asshole.

Cross-reference: GIFT.

Every post feeds the situation, nurtures it, makes it grow. You will not change opinions with logic, because they use none. Evey replying vindicates what they are doing for attention.

You don't have to roll over and accept everything. Quite the opposite. But at some point one must choose battles wisely.

Two of my closest friends were victims of horrendous sexual abuse; I know of more than that, some who never came forward. I don't agree with it. But saying that to the fucked up tough guy kids up there won't change anything but make me upset. And that would make them win.

I'm tempted to make a venn diagram and post that, just to see the reaction.

Code: (Rough draft) [Select]
MEN| Penis | Everything else | Boobs |WOMEN
Besides, I've noticed that the more balanced the sexes, the more intelligent the forum. Most likely this is because cultuarally while men are raised to like blood, guns and sex women are raised to be more peaceful, flowery and generally more pacifist, which means the cultural stigmas balance out and niether side falls into MOAR DAKKA/MARTHA STEWART territory. Now imagining a army charging into battle shouting MARTHA STEWART! at the top of their lungs. It's funny as hell.

Don't worry, Vector, MoM, general girl population of Bay 12, They're just trolls or idiots who are upset that they can't bump the bump with anything. If I was rejected by inanimate objects I would be bitter too.

anyways...

Ok, please don't kill me, but I don't think there was any reason to escalate that thread quite so much over criticism of a single bad joke.

Yes, it touches on real-world issues that are very serious and the commentary on just how very real-world and serious those issues are is correct.  However, humor is how some people actually deal with these things, instead of exploding with rage every time they are reminded about them.  Political incorrectness is an incredibly common form of humor and generally acceptable to most people, so long as politically incorrect statements are made to an extreme that can be easily recognized as insincere.  I very much doubt the person who made the comment about "sending Toady a female" was serious about it.

Yes, it should be no surprise that if pressed on the issue, people will reveal that they actually have bigoted perspectives, though it's not clear at all that they're so bigoted as to actually believe that a joking statement would still be acceptable if made in sincerity.  Regardless, you guys know better than anybody how big the problem is, and shouldn't be so surprised when you successfully out some people as holding sexist viewpoints.

I tend to avoid doing this online, but in real life, I make sexist/racist jokes on occassion.  I grew up in a community where such jokes were made in sincerity all the time and I found it despicable.  One of my forms of retaliation today is taking those same jokes and dialing them up a notch, and it becomes instead a joke at the expense of bigotry rather than in support of it.  The black and female friends I have welcome it, and actually engage in this sort of humor even more often than I do.  Yeah, it's debatable just how much this instance is in alignment with this excuse, and I understand the activistic urge to fight for one's cause on every sighting... but you're not going to gain any ground by damning swaths of people over a distasteful remark made in jest.

I understand I'm in the minority here.  Will commit seppuku if deemed necessary by the community.

However, humor is how some people actually deal with these things, instead of exploding with rage every time they are reminded about them.

I have a very hard time believing that they were coping with sexism.

Context informs us about whether sexist and racist jokes are made in jest, or as offhand attempts at "delightful" humor.  They were not ridiculing the oppressor.  They were instead playing into its hands, gleefully.

The question, really, is whether your black and female friends join in when you make those jokes.  If they do, then congratulations--you've managed to pull off your intent.  If they don't, then it might be a bit harder to deal with.

And, honest to god, I have just had it up to my forehead and into the stratosphere with "provide the man we like with a female for his enjoyment" jokes.

Especially because they started antagonizing MoM.

I was tempted to chime in when he started invoking the "Here in China" bit, but decided against it. There was no way for that to end well.
