So I haven't been talking with my best friend for some weeks (yup, we're kinda drifting apart, I guess), but today she called again. Turns out she had had another miscarriage.
And of course, like the emotional freak I am, all I could say was "uhu" and "that's... bad".

Over the phone? Dude, I wouldn't be able to think of anything else to say either. The only thing I can think of to do when shit happens that I can't confront logically is to volunteer hugs. Doesn't work so well by voice. I hope she's okay (and that you two drift unapart, which I'm guessing would be good just from the tone of your post).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Yeah, I guess. It's more than that, though. Issues. It's very hard to talk about without joking it away, though, because that's kinda where the issues' at.

I was able to see the area around my college campus.  It looks dangerous.

Mine was like that too.  It's like that in a lot of places.

The moment I boot up my PC it tries to install some "update bootstrapper"

What in the name of fuck is an update bootstrapper?

I'm confused...

It's updating you bootstraps so you can better pull yourself up by them.
Meanwhile, I hate it when my math class gives me these:

D is the only answer which gives the desired result, but technically it's incorrect because it doesn't use 8.
It's going to say that D was correct, even though I know it isn't.
If I could actually write the equation, I'd probably write it something like this:
(2+8) - (2+3+5+8)
--------------------
8
A bit unnecessary but it get's the job done.
When it gives you this question and makes it multiple choice it sort of defeats the purpose of the question.

EDIT: I just realized I could simplify it a bit by doing:
8 - 2(3 + 5)
--------------
8
...
Wait a minute, what is wrong with me? I don't even like math!

Doesn't C give you -1?

(-25+9)/(16) = (-16/16) = -1

Depends on whether you interpret it as -(5^2) or (-5)^2.

-(5^2) is the correct way of interpreting it, I think.  Powers come before subtraction.

But -5 is a number, not a subtraction. (-5)^2 is my gut instinct. But it's probably -(5^2) anyway, because none of the other answers are close.

0 - 5 = -5

What now.
