There was actually very LITTLE straight up porn, which lead to it immediately locking. Along with a thread that was nothing but posting demotivators or something.

In a sense. It was closed for shitposting AND rule breaking. We're starting to get shitposting epidemics up here in GD now too WHICH I OPPOSE and people seem to forget that I actually DO want real discussion in here AND in my thread. I actually support their view that the spam posts need to stop, but I don't support their methods at all. No matter what they say they did continually drop in en-mass to make the same points which isn't a good way to try and get a point across since people are understandability going to assume that it was planned out between them.

I honestly think Mayday was a bit much since unlike the others he never really tried singling anyone out when the posting would start, but again it's Toadys home and it's his rules and decisions.

I'm not going to state who said this, because posting IRC logs around is a shitty thing to do, but the following was said in #bay12games:
Quote
This is the first day ever I'm using this thing, IRC yes? And suddenly I understand much better the critic about the "What made you blah" threads.
Before this I didn't understand it much, but if you have the oppurtunity to be here using those threads seems silly.
I'd like to suggest that the regular denizens of threads like What made you _______ (and I'm particularly thinking of Janet, mainly because she just posted) should try hanging out on IRC.  Sure, we sometimes spend half an hour talking about metallurgy and whether DF's system of elasticities and yields is really realistic enough... but we're nice people, we don't bite, we don't turn you into zombies.  And just maybe you'll find that forums aren't really the right place to discuss how your day's been and who really pissed you off at school this afternoon.

I think one problem is that you have way too much of a sense of ownership and policing. You can say that you're against "shitposting" all day, but in the end, you're just another forum member and throwing your weight around isn't going to help anyone. In short, acting like a moderator won't help, because you are not one, and you can't say you don't act like one, because it's plainly clear from your posting history. You pretend that your own thread is like some little fiefdom you govern, where you can lock and unlock at your whim and make decrees about who can and can't post what, even though it's an extremely nebulously-defined thread in the first place. I sincerely doubt that this is the intent of giving users the ability to lock their own threads, and I think you've provided a fairly good example of how such a system can be abused, especially where extremely long and loosely-guided threads are concerned.

Why is this true of people from IRC and no other group on this forum? This place is full of different little groups of like-minded individuals who tend to post at similar times in similar places, so I don't understand why this one in particular gets singled out.

Yes, the "Made You Feel <Thing>" today threads, and That One Giant Roleplaying Thread could definitely use a realtime environment, especially the latter. Some things just aren't well-suited to a forum, so it's at least worth considering alternatives, especially since starting an IRC channel, even a private one, is completely free and very, very easy, and might end up being a better or more convenient choice for some things. I'm not saying this just to get people to stop doing those things here, but because I sincerely believe there are better-suited media for threads like that (especially the short-post several-pages-per-hour roleplay), which might suit all involved pretty well. There is also an argument that a thread that generates pages upon pages of posts in a period of a few hours causes difficulty in moderation.

Yes, in fact, the Original Poster does have a higher level of control over what happens in their own threads.  Not one respected by the forum software, but certainly respected by its administrator.

This specific thread is a little different, since Vlynndar hasn't logged on in months.

Honestly. I've been on the IRC. And I did actually like it there mostly. But the problem I have from bothering to go to it anymore is a feeling that I'm just known as "That one person that started the happy thread".

Honestly If I ever knew the thread would cause such shitstorms by just existing apparently I'd of never made it in the first place. But again when I made it my laptop was under repairs and joining the IRC would be impossible on my PSP anyway.

And on how I treat the thread. I don't LIKE doing that, and I decided I'd just stop entirely. The only reason I kept doing it was because toady kept saying to at least use the topic for it's (Admittedly very vague) purpose and not just rapid post into it.

And I'm not doing any singling out. I'm just saying I DO know where they're coming from, since sometimes I feel similarly.

No, that pretty much is what it really is. I dunno where you get the idea that is not exactly how threads work.

No, but we most likely need one.

That One RP seems to be twice locked right now.

Somewhere, yes. Don't know exactly where, though.

MoM left and it's going to a different, user-made forum away from B12.

I was just thinking that a lot of the spamming is related to topics that might be better discussed in themed threads we do have lying around.

This specific thread is a little different, since Vlynndar hasn't logged on in months.

There is a sense of thread ownership and of providing guidelines for a thread to follow. There is a huge difference between this and stating arbitrary rules at arbitrary points in time during a thread's life, doing so on a whim, or using the thread-locking feature whenever you feel like you've been slighted or see something you don't like, especially when it's something that doesn't even have to do with that thread in particular.

Like any self-governance feature, it has to be used responsibly, and I don't think that's always been the case here. The intent, to me, is that if you start a thread, you should be able to clearly define what the thread is/isn't for, and to guide the discussion along to a reasonable degree, not to enact petty rules you pull out of thin air whenever you feel like it, act extraordinarily (p/m)aternalistic or patronizing toward the people there, or to lock it whenever something upsets you. That, to me, is crossing the line.

Well Acanthus made a Touhou thread in other games too. So I guess that one is free to use. Though honestly I think it should be a GD thread because of the focus on other works too. Like the music and comics and things.
