I just read that little hurricane that happened, and now I'm beginning to wonder if I should even be here.

Its to many pages back for me to hunt down and figure out what the fuss has been about. Though I am a bit curious because it seems to have everyone weirded out.

And rightly so. The trouble is mainly around 1870, I think.

The actual problem seems to have evolved. An old poster who had been banned (Dasleah) came back under a sockpuppet, and shortly thereafter, Janet locked the Happy thread as something between a punitive measure for a different thread and as an experiment to see what effect it'd have on the forums overall. The result was that a lot of people defended her choice to do so (though she has since apologized, which is fine for me), but Dasleah insisted on arguing about it even after everyone else seemed to have dropped it, in the process dredging up an argument over whether the forums had fallen into an exclusionary clique and how acceptable "shitposting" (posts with no content, purely for the sort of entertainment you might get in a random IM conversation) could be. That went on for a while, and Toady locked the sad thread to sort through it and banned Dasleah, as well as a number of people who took his side in the argument (but far more reasonably; the primary reason for the ban seems to be that this was persistent behavior which had been discussed via PM already, not simply because they'd taken Dasleah's side), as well as one poster (Makrond) who seemed to be about as aggressive as Dasleah about the whole thing, and another poster (GamerKnight) who more or less admitted to trolling when he insisted that he was only posting for the lulz and that he was justified in complaining that the shitstorm wasn't as bad as it could be because it was less amusing for him that way.

I hope I haven't been overly harsh on anybody, and while I've tried to be relatively neutral, it's hard to keep biased language choices from creeping in, especially when discussing the motivations of a bunch of people involved (most importantly, Toady and people who aren't completely okay with Mayday and Retro's bannings). To be clear, my own thought on that particular issue is that the two bans I mentioned in that parenthetical note probably weren't called for, but I haven't seen everything that led up to them and so may not be qualified to make that call. And I also want to make clear that this is the first time in my entire time here that I haven't been 100% okay with a moderating action by our admins, and to commend them on what I think is still an amazing record. Seriously, massive respect for that.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I'm not leaving, but I'm staying in FGaR for a while. I rarely contributed much of use up here in GD anyway, aside from the fading Great Music Thread.

I have to say that I am both saddened and blown away by the whole fiasco that happened yesterday. If only people could be nice to each other for more than 5 minutes while arguing, 90% of everything that went down yesterday was ultimately due to people taking things way too personally at one point or another. It is very unfortunate that we lost so many members as a result.

While I don't agree with the the group of banned people's methods, I do agree with their argument that Shitposts aren't all that bad. I consider it to be benign as long as it isn't meant to insult anybody. Hell, in some cases I could even consider it useful for the entertaining people, although it seems that others have much different feelings on the matter. I like being able to talk to people in a silly way that makes people smile and I consider it a shame that others here view it with such distaste. Oh well, the Forum Guidelines tell me that I have absolutely no case regarding this argument, so I will drop it for now.

Also, regarding this new splinter forum, I don't feel that strongly for or against it. However I will be keeping tabs on it's progression, to say the least.

I don't understand this drama. One guy was becoming a crusader, toady snuffed out the problem before it became a problem. Granted, he was a little hasty banning a user running several legendary games (Adventure guy, Border Guard), he was just stopping what he saw was a problem.

Truly, I think the problem stems from toady's workload. Dude's got one of the most complicated games I've ever seen to manage, plus all of the forums. And hen real life comes in to the equation.

Bauglir, excellent post-mortem. Summed it up quite nicely.

Anyway, my quads are reaaally fucking sore from parrallell squats. And we have to lift weights tomorrow.

On a slightly different note then all these posts of semi-goodbye, I have discovered that the spectroscopy lab hates me. Spent half of yesterday to figure out that my system was degrading due to the amount of light we used to induce fluorescence and today we found out that two measurements that should give the same results refuse to do so. Either I've discovered something interesting, or I'm going to whack my forehead next week, probably the latter.

This is all kind of surprising to me; I just found out today what happened. Oh well, I guess. There was a lot of preexisting tension between Retro and Toady that I'm not sure either of them handled very constructively (although I think each tried, in their own ways, at different points), and I suppose between Toady and people from IRC in general, particularly those of us critical of how the forums are run.

In particular, I find it rather baffling that someone like Janet is allowed to act incredibly petty, taking out minor unrelated grievances on threads she started even when they're not in any way related, as if she brought it upon herself to moderate. That just isn't cool, especially given what Toady has said before about how we shouldn't attempt to self-police in that manner. It just seems really childish and I have no idea why it's encouraged by anyone.

People asked about "dogpiling" earlier; there's a trend for some of us on IRC to agree on certain things or be bugged by similar things, plus the forums get mentioned on IRC regularly enough, so there's a history of us posting on threads at a similar time. This has irked Toady in the past because he's seemed to get the impression that there's some kind of mass-trolling or collusion going on, when in reality it's not really any different from any one of a number of other small (and large) cliques or groups with similar interests elsewhere on the forums (such as those in this thread). Hence some people from IRC probably being a little paranoid over being accused of "dogpiling" this thread, since it's happened before, even to the point where at least one of us has been accused of trolling for someone else, which was never the case.

I just can't help but feel like there's a double-standard going on, where immature behavior from some parties goes disregarded whereas similar (and in some cases more justified) behavior from another party results in warnings or a ban, and where some cliquey groups of like-minded, probably-biased posters act as such with no problem, whereas others are lambasted for it.

I'm not going to defend the actions of anyone in particular, here, since I don't think many people really expected anything constructive to happen. I think that's part of the problem; some people got so fed up with the futility of constructive argument regarding the forums that they decided to forgo any pretense of being constructive at all. I can't say I blame them, but I also can't say it should be tolerated. I just wish a better solution to the entire mess could be found, rather than this bicker-and-ban cycle. It's sad, because the people involved (at least the ones I know) are generally pretty intelligent and have worthwhile things to say.

Speaking only for myself here, I'd say it's less "silly random posting is bad" and more "silly random posting is not within the spirit of this forum". I mean, obviously you can't expect the same kind of atmosphere everywhere, so the real argument isn't what is "good" or "bad" in some mystifyingly objective sense, but rather what is appropriate within a certain context.

Truly, I think the problem stems from toady's workload. Dude's got one of the most complicated games I've ever seen to manage, plus all of the forums. And hen real life comes in to the equation.

That's why people like myself and Retro (and others) have expressed the idea that more active moderators would be a good idea, but that idea has come and gone and pretty much that entire argument has been beaten to death and nothing will come of it.

Yeah, I'm serious.  The trash is spilling out of the containment zone, just like before.

Yeah, I've been saying this on-and-off for a while now. Not as criticism against anyone in particular, but rather against the way the system is currently set up and the sort of behavior and atmosphere it has obviously encouraged.

It's really not a splinter forum.  Being partially responsible for the misunderstanding, I guess I should make clear that its founders are not trying to rival or replace bay12forums.  It's really meant as an extension of the IRC channel, somewhere for the things from that community that need the permanence of a forum, since some of the major players in that community can't use this forum any more.
Frankly, Captain explains it better than I could, but he's not here (and his explanation has fallen off my IRC backscroll).

You know, when you say it like that, perhaps that even falls under the forum guidelines concerning spam. I hate to be a stick in the mud and suggest reporting but Toady has repeatedly advised us to report any posts we have a problem with. If enough people have a problem with them (and it seems enough people do) then maybe we can curb it. At this point it's hard to say that such posts aren't disruptive.

He's drawing an analogy to illustrate that VN's attitude and culture spilled over into the rest of the forums, causing problems, and that something similar is happening (or, in my opinion, has very much already happened) with FG&RP. At least I think that's what he's getting at.

Personally, I think FG&RP itself could probably use better moderation anyway, even if nothing else were to change, but that's not the larger point being made.

Listen to this man. The IRC was already needing its own board. It's not so much a splinter off of Bay 12 as it is a new community with a different approach. Or something like that.

Could you elaborate a bit, G-Flex? Having come after VN ceased to be, the only thing I know about it is that it was bad and had porn.

I wasn't as active back then, but it was sort of like if you took all of "Finally..." and rolled it up into one subforum with no real statement of purpose. You can probably imagine where that would lead: A sort of degenerate forum subculture with lots of awful threads and drivel that eventually spilled over elsewhere. It was awful, Toady locked it entirely and eventually removed it, and attempted to give the current "Finally..." boards more direction/purpose in order to prevent that from happening again.

That's my take on it, anyway. My understanding of it is pretty limited. I don't even remember much (if any) straight-up porn, but I know it got close. Others would know more.
