Thank you for this post because it lucidly captures exactly what I've been feeling. Those threads, I think, have gone a long way towards keeping the tone of these boards friendly. I think they've had a lot of influence in the more serious discussions where people are more likely to be reasonable and understanding than in pretty much any board I've ever been to.

But I don't see a solution either. There's a fine line between endearing goofiness and annoying spam and where that line is drawn is different for everyone.

Sounds familiar. Macbeth? Or Shakespeare in general?
Macbeth, Scene V, somewhere. I had to google it to get the line itself right.

So you could say that your post was a tale, told by a forum poster, full of soundandfury, signifying nothing?

It's definitely Shakespeare... dammit, ninja'd.
I chose the name (which btw is my handle in many places, not just here) to counter my own hubris - my posts often are tales told by an idiot, and signify nothing.  Also, I used to be even more inclined to ranting than I am now.  So... yeah, Willfor, basically thatsthejoke.jpg.

It's a very tricky situation with all the different attitudes here. It seems we have attracted a good number of people without a common interest other than a generally chill atmosphere. Unfortunately bringing them together ruins this atmosphere.

I'm thinking there may be a solution along the lines of "If something is meant privately between you and your friends then keep it private", but setting guidelines for such a thing would be problematic.

As you've taken the time to explain the joke behind your name, I will do the same about my avatar/title as it largely performs the same kind of function. I sometimes tend to post with an amount of sarcasm that can be blatantly offensive to people. Even offensive to myself. My avatar is a reminder to myself that I can come off sounding like a smug bastard sometimes, and when I see it, I sometimes realise that I should go back over my post and make sure I am not being too harsh.

It doesn't always work, some things fall through the cracks. Still, it's a self-check, and largely has helped me to not stick my foot in my mouth even more than I do already.

I don't like sounding like I'm just repeating what somebody else just said, but I can't help but say that this is exactly how I feel too.. But as usual, I'm not able to express it myself. The 'special atmosphere' this place has and the 'things that made you X' threads are pretty much inseparable in my mind.

There is that aspect to it, but it's a bit deeper:

The basilisk in question is looking for friendship on the internet, but by smiling at people he is only killing them. In that case, the smile itself is unintentionally sarcastic, carrying both the deadly sting of the eyes, and the genuine smiling lips. The best sarcasm -- in my opinion -- is words said in a tone that sounds absolutely sincere, but carrying a message that runs entirely counter to what is said. So the avatar becomes a metaphor for the best -- but most easily confused -- sarcasm.

As the avatar is a symbol for possibly confusing sarcasm, it leads quite quickly to thoughts that I may have just made an entirely confusing statement. Confusion can lead to anger, or offense. My mind turns to offense. In that, it fulfills its purpose.

You know, when you say it like that, perhaps that even falls under the forum guidelines concerning spam. I hate to be a stick in the mud and suggest reporting but Toady has repeatedly advised us to report any posts we have a problem with. If enough people have a problem with them (and it seems enough people do) then maybe we can curb it. At this point it's hard to say that such posts aren't disruptive.

I'm all for eradicating spam, but it'll require drastic measures.

I...is anyone tantruming? I certainly don't think I am. I was just trying to make a reasonable suggestion. I don't want anyone to get banned, or hopefully not even muted over something so trivial, but maybe a warning from Toady would help. I just want to encourage this place to be friendly and chill and respectful of all whenever possible.

Guys please stop, we're suppose to help each other.

I would say this is helpful to people. Especially to Bauglir, who doesn't like people agreeing with you?

Okay, I dislike the idea of sides in this, I'm on my own side and I agree with both groups on some things. But overall I really have to sympathize with Retro. As for Gamerknight, I really haven't had a bad experience with him (please take note that I still don't have a good idea of what went on), frankly, he seemed like a good guy and I may miss him if I deem his actions unworthy of a ban.

In conclusion, I really am going to miss Retro, maybe Gamerknight and I hope they (at least Retro, maybe Gamerknight) ban dodge and just don't tell anyone.
