stuff about complaints about how Dragon Age 2 doesn't service the straight male gamer
What? Are those people's exact words? "Service the straight male gamer?" Service?

That's disgusting.

On the subject of Duke Nukem and sexism: I think the feminist blog in question doesn't understand over the top satire and self-parody.

Duke Nukem has always been about raging chauvinism.

It's basically 80's action movie personality dialed up to 11.  I'm not sure if it's intended as parody or not, but I can kind of enjoy it as one.  Not really a fan of the series, though, as I've always thought the gameplay kinda sucked.  I don't understand how Duke Nukem survived with such a fan base when it competed directly with Quake, which outclassed it in everything but nudity and voice acting... which was only a further plus for me.  Novelties that are entertaining for about 5 seconds aren't enough to make a game and really get annoying quickly when repeated, unless you happen to have an endless stream of tens of thousands of them.

Nah, I think that's me not having any distinction between the words "service" and "serve," so I always mix 'em up =/

Anyway, here is the article I was reading.

The feminist blog in question understands it and doesn't enjoy that sort of humor for a number of reasons.  There's a big difference between "doesn't understand" and "understands, but condemns."

I've never gotten it either. I don't think you can call it "satire" just because it's joking about it. Too much of what you would call "locker room humour", I guess. But then again, I personally think the later GTA games, which are also ripe with sexism, does a very good job at simultaneously satirise, parody and lampshade that and sexism in general, so I guess the mileage varies.

Oh. Well I think you essentially hit the nail on the head with that, since it seems the complaints are all indeed about "service." Because obviously there's no way that a game can appeal to straight guys unless it's sexually...

Doesn't terribly depress me. These are companies that do everything else to appeal to their largest demographics, it's not a stretch to see that they only put into female companions what will sell and not investing a penny more. I would be sad if a company that focuses on making games were to do that, but this is asking too much of some companies without working over the whole making games purely for a profit thing. At that point you had best face Dreamworks before ever setting foot on the games industry.
