This may be a stupid question, but are people who spell it 'grammer' actually honestly wrong, or are they just trollin'?

+1 for saying that with a split infinitive. Of course, I've never heard anyone insist that it's invariably wrong except grade-school English teachers and idiots that think English is a Romance language and should follow all Latin uses.

No, but a lot of people do say stuff like "Hopefully doesn't mean 'it is to be hoped' it means 'done in a hopeful manner.'" Right, because lately means "done in a late manner."

I've never heard anyone say anything like that. Formally, both those words have both meanings, depending on placement in the sentence, although the "in a late manner" meaning of lately is exceedingly rare lately.

Eh, I have troubles with commas in english.
In German you put them everywhere, while in English they yre pretty sparse.

The general rule of thumb is, if you would pause very briefly when speaking the sentence, you should use a comma. Longer pauses require a semicolon, a new sentence, or a conjoining word for the splice. This does not apply to listing items, in which case commas are inserted between each listed item, with a conjoining word for the last item. The exception is when the list items include a comma (for example shoes, leather; shoes, canvas; and shoes, rubber) in which IIRC a semiclon is used as the list separator to avoid confusion.

Really? It's pretty common. William Safire is pretty strongly against it, most of the usage experts are.

I don't think I've ever heard the complaint lodged against any other modal adverb, though.

The infinitive is cute, though gerunds are much nicer.
Also, the real fun is in interwoven phrase structure, like the subject complement clause being tangled up with a predicative nominal clause, with bits of the two scattered around the main clause until you need to hunt them down word by word.

Not even all Romance languages follow Latin structure entirely. Sure, the English language made off with about 70-80% of its words from Latin, but it's goddamn Germainc.

I've always had an easy time with spelling and structuring language (as well as vocabulary) - that came seemingly instinctively to me. Could never bring myself pay attention to the grammatical parts of the Swedish (or English, for that matter) classes, though, so I have no idea what all those fancy latin words for stuff means. I guess this is also part of why grammar and "laws" always seemed unnecessary to me - I never needed them in the first place. It always makes me feel stupid when people throw them around, though.

That's pretty much what they're for. Using them is mainly for making your opponent in a legal/political/normal-people debate look like a complete idiot who can't tie two words together coherently.
