True. And by the time "decent people step up to fix" things, the damage is already done.

Edit: We're not improving, we're just finding better ways to be assholes en-masse while looking righteous and official.

Yes, there are stupid people and stupid events that fuck everything up, and there are good people and good events that make things better.  It's all about which you pay attention to.

The good world is only good when compared to what we manage to see as bad, and what we see isn't always what there's actually out there.
Also, attentional bias isn't going to make reality a better place, or get to counteract and cope with Black Swan events.

Couldn't the opposite be true?  A good world where someone has a "bad attention bias".  I think it's better to be happy.

Well, I pay attention to both. I may be an idealist, but I always look at the big picture, and take as much into account as I humanly can. The nature of people isn't an evil one... it does, however, provide us with a lot of room for self-delusion. Any great evil perpetrated by anyone has always been thought of by the perpetrators as good. We just need to open deluded people up to the reality of their actions, and foster empathy in them, so that we can keep on forging forward as a species.

Some day, it'll be fuckin' rainbows and unicorns as far as the eye can see.

Good times are overrated. Blind fear of everything coupled with nausea 24/7 and a deep wish to die, yet being unwilling to do so in order to spare the person you love is where it's really at.
