FWIW, I've checked the census records and nobody in my direct line of ancestry held slaves, that I can tell. That doesn't indicate tolerance though, it's more of an indication that they were too damn poor to afford any (like the vast majority of antebellum Southerners). Did find a couple of distaff branches that had one or two slaves here and there.
