You can interpret it as saying that society needs different types of people.  So while you may not be the same as someone else, and your abilities may not match theirs in some areas, there's still probably something useful you can apply yourself to doing with enough effort.  Actually, I really dislike views that discard some people as useless from the start.

IMHO it should be used to hammer into people that society is comprised of different types of people, with some tickled pink by things others loath, and one's need to constantly adjust to the situation. Not by excessive humility like "I'm sorry I'm taking up your oxygen" on the street, but by not being an immovable, rigid mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging troglodyte. Adaptability to social circumstances.
