Baseless assumptions are the best assumptions because baseless assumptions don't stop.

Wow, I need to stop using that line.

Baseless assumptions? you lot are trying to get a guy to carry knives on him for "self defense", which is unlikely to work if the mugger that they are against calls their bluff, and certain to fail if there is more than one mugger. And yes, on top of that, trouble with the police.
Really, this bit of irresponsible advice is among the worst I've seen in these forums, and that's saying something. It's even worse than the bit about bringing a gun in the "trek accross the US" thread.
hey, if you think you got the galls to carry around weapons thats fine by me, just make sure you're ready when its time to pull them out. Im not stupid enough to not carry around a knife at least but i mostly carry them or a handgun when im hiking due to the damn lions

Here's a crazy idea.  If someone is mugging you, give them what they want.  Chances are they don't want to turn it into a murder, and if they do that's when you start running.

That idea is so insane that it might just work, Cthulhu.

Bah.  I dislike being bored.  Time to go study Russian.  I am uninterested in doing this, but there's nothing I'd rather do...

Also, one of my professors is in the hospital.

That only encourages them to do the same to someone else later. Far better to try and fight them, at least for the sake of whomever would be their next target.
