On the other hand, Poland and Hungary have zero mentioned =/
Understandable. I don't know about Hungary, but Polish literature is composed of an ungodly mixture of fanservicing the low national self-esteem, wet dreams of former glory, and a few inside jokes on the state of the Polish nation. Even in Poland, nobody sane would willingly read these, if not for the public school system.

... Seriously?  I watched the Andrzej Wajda version of Zemsta and found it pretty good.  Maybe the subtitles were messing with me, or I just have terrible taste.

(Plus, most literature can be boiled down that way when you really try.  Most of French writing from the 1600s through 1930 is complaining about either rich people or religious people, and then after that there's a brief segment that can be summarized by "Oh my god, fascism."  Right after that it gets back into the porn.)

There seems to be a number of Polish Nobel Prize in Literature winners, or nominees, as well.  Plus, positivism seems interesting... it's a movement not seen in most western countries, which generally went the romanticism -> realism -> naturalism -> existentialism -> post-modern/everything is gritty! route rather than romanticism -> Young Poland -> positivism.

Also, what about this?

Quote from: Wikipedia
Stanisław Lem was a Polish writer of science fiction, philosophy and satire. He was named a Knight of the Order of the White Eagle. His books have been translated into 41 languages and have sold over 27 million copies. He is perhaps best known as the author of the 1961 novel Solaris, which has been made into a feature film three times. In 1976, Theodore Sturgeon claimed that Lem was the most widely read science-fiction writer in the world.

Quote from: Also Wikipedia
Joanna Chmielewska is the pen name of Irena Kühn (born 2 April 1932 in Warsaw), a Polish writer and screenplay author. Her work is often described as "ironic detective stories". Her novels, which have been translated into at least nine languages, have sold more than 6 million copies in Poland and over 10 million copies in Russia.

I don't expect them to teach science fiction or detective novel people at a public university, though >_>

My game in Hitman: Blood Money crashed, all my progress in the game was lost because the game pulls a mean "no save-scumming" attitude.  Not like I would cheat anyway...

Lem is science fiction in the same sense that Dick is science fiction. SF bordering on surrealism.

Speaking of surrealism, Dick, Lem, and Spanish literature, there should absolutely be a class on Borges. Absolutely.

What brand/model of keyboard did you buy? Also, did you spill anything on it? Also, this is probably stupid, but have you tried another USB port, or seen if the keyboard works in another computer (or if another keyboard works fine on that one)?

I understand significantly less German than I do Polish.  This is embarrassing me, because theoretically I should understand German as an English speaker.

Not a single word.

Im sorry Vector, but no, you shouldn't theoretically be able to understand German. They're not that close. :P

It's a Razer. Also, I've tried it in different USB ports, with similar results, however, I haven't tried another computer.

And I'm fairly cautious with my keyboard. I last hosed it out (compressed air, I'm not an idiot) about a month ago, but if something got spilt in it, then it wasn't by me, and I wasn't around to see it.

Ja, I speak nothing except for "lamb," "shit," "Do you seriously not speak German," "good night," and "my god."  Well, also "one, two, three," "yes," and "no," and a couple of things one wouldn't like to say in the company of people of Jewish descent.

Curse you, Sound of Music.

Really?  See, I find I can easily understand most simple Spanish and Italian (though to be fair I also speak French and studied a very little Spanish), and people keep going on about how similar German is to English and how easy it is to understand even if you've had absolutely no contact with the language.

I officially disagree :I

You have a better chance understanding Swedish.

Oh, huh.  I shall keep that in mind.

There are lots of words that are the same/very close.
Sky (except it's pronounced in a very awkward manner to someone unfamiliar with the language), und, under, litten, etcetera.

On the plus side, knowing Italian will help learning Swiss German.

Edit: V Christ Spanish and Portuguese. My dad claims that he understands Spanish just fine but Spanish-speakers can't understand his Portuguese, and I have no idea how that works. And frankly I don't want to.
