Steam keeps trying to download all my games, despite the fact that I backed them all up. They're sitting there, on the disk. I tell Steam to restore from that and it goes "Okay, I'll redownload all 140GB of it, instead of reading the backup you spent 3 hours making."

AUGH

Have you tried shoving it into Offline mode?

Huh. It didn't do that when I copied DOWII over onto my new computer. It just updated what was there.

Which I found rather cool.
In fact, it raised my respect for steam a little.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

Yep, refuses to install.

Anyway, after a system restore to get my initial Steam install back, I try the advice on their support, namely:

Quote
Log out and exit Steam
Navigate to the folder where Steam is installed (by default: C:\Program Files\Steam\)
Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe
Cut and paste your Steam folder to the new location, for example: D:\Games\Steam\
Launch Steam
Steam will briefly update and then you will be ready to play
All future game content will be downloaded to the new folder D:\Games\Steam\Steamapps\

Guess what it's now trying to do. I may need to cross-post this into the rage thread.

EDIT: Okay, for some reason, all the subfolders in my games folders are empty. What the hell.

EDIT2: And in the backup. Oh god.

Yeah, and a system restore isn't curing it. There better be a way to get this backup to install right.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Friend of the family died about an hour ago. Was a cop, stopped some guy and got ran over by a drunk guy speeding down the lane some time later. Apparently somehow neither he or his partner saw it comming.

The guy is in the hospital on alcoholic coma.

To be honest I'm not sad, just feeling weird since he was here about a week ago, sitting exactly were I am now.

The 'Regarding the State of the Forum' thread got locked. Was hoping some progress would've been made there.

I'm not seeing where the personal attacks come in, unless you're talking about me talking about G-Flex. My only opinion was, that single post was very Armok-y.

Also, just so you know, I've got nothing against mew.

I was trying to find a part way, way back, where we were all giving e-hugs to Sofia for some reason. But as I was reading through my posts, I realized what a dickhead I used to be.

Yay, I wake up to find my thread locked. Not that it's a surprise, as it was going to be locked sooner or later, but I had hoped to wait until an argument quelled and lock it peacefully, rather than Toady stepping in with a lock and casting the whole endeavor in a negative light.

It was mostly personal attacks by this point anyway.

Yeah, uh, no, that's really not how you phrased it. I spent most of that thread trying to keep things civil, largely successfully. It really didn't help when you jumped in, called G-Flex spiteful and self-righteous etc. etc. in a very direct and insulting way. and then pointed out that you hadn't read the actual thread.

The Sir Pseudonymous / racism stuff didn't help either. I can't believe that guy got off without a mute.

Not to start a new conflagration, but I actually did put - 'I'm talking about this post - -Enterquote-'

But yeah, I should probably go back and read the whole thread again. I might owe G-Flex a hasty apology.
