Total Depravity sound like the name to a band I wouldn't really like, but listen to once in a while on principle.

Going to hop in and say I agree with Realm here.

And thus I am off to build a bomb shelter, I may not have fun making it but I sure will have fun surviving when everyone else dies because Republicans control the house.

What me bitter?

Cat was put down. Turns out she had liver problems that had let the abscess take hold, and another abscess on her tongue.

That's awful.  I'm so sorry.

That's unfortunate, but it's better, at least, that it was caught by the vets than if it'd continued to cause her suffering.

I'm sorry, though.

We could have kept her alive, but some skin had died and would have had to be removed, so she'd have been walking around with a hole in her for months. It's better this way.

Augh, now I am crying.

I'm remembering a traveling professor who visited Berkeley and, from a crowded 250-person chemistry classroom, decided that he wanted to interview me.  We spoke for a while about education, the responsibilities of a teacher, the responsibilities of a student.  He came at a time when I really needed someone like him to come along.  At the end, he asked me what I wanted to do with my life.  I told him that I wanted to teach, and he told me that he hoped I would become a poet.  That he wanted to open a volume of poetry and find my name there.

To know that these people have had this faith in me makes me so... I don't have the word.  I know myself.  I know what a short-tempered, mean, fallible person I am.  I want to repay their faith with something worthwhile.  For all the people who have seen me, and said: "I know you will be fine.  You have determination in your eyes" when I felt utterly hopeless.

I don't know what to say.  Normally, I would summarize.  I would say "Yes, this is my course of action."  But this is a different feeling.  Not sadness, but I'm crying all the same, the way I always do when I see something grander than myself, that allows me to forget all my little pettinesses for a while.

Lost of our last to something like that. It was pretty heartbreaking to see, but I honestly felt better after they put him to sleep. I don't think I've had an animal yet that has just died peacefully, it's always something terminal and unpleasant.
