The point of school is for YOUR future and for YOU to learn.

Exactly.

Also,
"This is a necessary process because the producers and businesses need to be protected from things such as other countries and criminals and stuff like that and this sentence is too long and I should really use a semicolon or something to break it up."

Fuckin' run-on sentences, how do they work?

EDIT:

Urk. How's this sound?
Quote from: Schilcote
A common misconception is that the economy is a "Zero Sum Game", there is a constant set amount of wealth in the system and to gain more you have to take it from someone else. It isn't. Businesses create products and generate wealth, which "trickles down" to their employees. These employees (consumers) consume products and transfer their wealth to other businesses, who use it to generate more wealth. This cycle goes on at every level at a variety of scales, and keeps going until the government screws something up or something else really bad happens such as a war or large natural disaster.

The government's role is to promote "fair" economic practices and provide services that the private sector cannot; such as civil protection and law, as well as providing infrastructure such as roads and highways. They must tax the consumers and businesses, removing a portion of the economy's wealth and effectively destroying it. This process is a "necessary evil" because the economy needs military protection and infrastructure, and it generally isn't too much of a problem as long as the private sector is generating wealth faster than the government is taxing it away.

EDIT:

Ugh, I have to write three whole mini-essays like that in one test. Here, this ought to be worth a laugh:
Quote from: Schil
A centrally planned economy is... well, centrally planned by the government. In a centrally planned economy, the government owns all the land and capital and the serfs are ordered to produce goods and services at prices set by the government. In practice, this sort of economy usually requires a certain degree of totalitarianism from the government which comes with its own set of problems (namely, everyone wanting to kill the moron who thought a centrally planned economy would be a good idea). As an old Hungarian joke says, "What is socialism? The longest and most painful road from capitalism to capitalism."

In a free market economy, the government acts more as an enabler for each entity (person or corporation) to act in their own self-interest. The government provides regulation and infrastructure, and the free citizens spend and work for their money as they see fit. Generally, this works quite well until someone decides to try a centrally planned economy (and then get killed). The government still has to provide things that the private sector can't, however, such as military protection (from the folks who want to try a centrally planned economy, no doubt) and law enforcement.

Uh... how exactly do you go about destroying this wealth?  I mean, it's gonna go back into the economy somehow.

No, no it doesn't. Wealth =/= money. The MONEY goes back into the economy, but since the government didn't actually do anything to earn that money, the wealth it represents just goes away. Or maybe it's permanently part of the government. I'm a bit tired.

No, they put the money back into the economy, giving it back wealth.

Get some sleep.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Don't think so. The government provides services and suchlike. Military defense, even, counts as one, and the relevant manufacturing that government money pays for is one of many forms of wealth. Just as an example.

Yeah, that's true. It's necessary for the government to provide civil defense services. Its just that when you redistribute wealth, you really just destroy wealth and redistribute green paper.

If by redistributing wealth you mean taxing rich people more and poor people less, you're giving people who would have other wise not have been very active participants in the economy more of a chance actually helping it.

In theory. But that's all political discussion and I understand that Bay12 is a very liberal institution.

BUT YOU'RE STILL WRONG >:C (that was sarcasm)

Bay12 is liberal right now because right now liberal is the smart thing to be. Soon enough the conservatives will have their turn being the good guys, but we have to swing the pendulum.

I finally solved my Fruit Fly problem. I would normally be rejoicing, but I'll need to wait for the experience to be a little less ripe first. BTW, do not read farther if you're faint of stomach.

I'm making a brownie pudding-cake thing for my roommate's B-Day, and I needed a small 9x9 glass pan that I'd misplaced when I moved in. I was poking around in the cabinets for it, and found it squirreled away in a low sink-side cabinet- but for some reason it was sitting in a strange, thick, brown-black liquid. I picked it up, and followed the pool back to the dark area at the back of the cupboard, and to a sagging plastic bag of.... something.

It was at that point that the smell hit me. It was like raw sewage, dirt, and spoiled meat. Fused to the wood of the cupboard was a bag of potatoes... or what had allegedly been potatoes a year or so ago. Apparently, the last tenants had forgotten that they were shoved back there, and I'd failed to notice them when I moved in. There they sat, sprouting eyes, molding, and rotting, over the course of the last year or more. They'd near-completely liquified... and soon after fruit flies got into the house, they set up a large breeding population in and around the bag. What had been buzzing around my apartment was merely the tip of the iceberg.

I chucked the bag immediately, but in the split second that I saw the contents... ugh. The contents of the bag were many things, and potatoes was not one of them. I grabbed yellow cleaning gloves and some bleach, and went to town... but the shear number of maggots and molds and horrible fungal flora almost got to me. And the smell... oh god. It filled the kitchen, and put me off any thoughts of making desert.

Broody's cake will have to wait. I first need to rediscover my desire to eat anything ever again.
