To be honest, I consider you some sort of Mathematical deity. I feel like you would strike down any self-respecting teenager who could not calculate their times tables up to 12 in their head.

Also- This has just been bursting inside me. Is that an emu egg? It looks like an emu egg.

No gradual steps up?

It's all gradual steps up of one sort or another, but in general one really, really wants a tenured position at (whatever) university early in their career.  From what I've heard, mathematics is really nothing like the corporate ladder.  Whichever level you wind up on initially tends to be roundabout where you stay.  Well, that, or lower.  There isn't that much trading up.  Mostly trading down.

I... heh, thank you =)  And yes, it's an emu egg.  Mostly because I feel like an egg waiting to hatch, and emu sounds like emo.  I take myself too seriously, sometimes.

Additionally, emu eggs are awesome.  My aunt used to have one, all enormous and green like a bloated ceramic avocado.

Nope.  Sorry.  If you look at the picture, it doesn't have the tapering at the stem, and it's also the wrong color and size.

On a slightly more macabre note, they take 2 hours to boil and apparently don't taste that bad.

Bah. The first pic I had (which was way too huge) looked exactly like that. I dunno where I could get my hands on an emu egg around here.

So I'm also guessing you can't get a job a a community campus and then step up? College teaching must at least be better than grade school.

No, definitely not.  College is definitely better than grade school, but teaching community college... well, you don't even need a PhD or publishing for that, and you sure as heck won't be teaching anything interesting.  Just pre-algebra and freshman calculus, over and over and over.  That's like dropping whatever lofty dreams you had into a vat full of thermite.  It's just bad, when it comes to resumes.

That isn't to say, of course, that one couldn't make it work.  It's just one of those probabilistic thingers, and I don't happen to have the Heart of Gold parked in my back yard.

Yes, I have an emu egg sitting in a shelf in my room.

It was a dud egg from one of the emu nests out back, and I cleaned it out myself. They're all so beautiful.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

It's more along the lines of not having control over my own actions, actually. Sort of an "and I must scream" situation.

Welcome to adulthood.  Enjoy the rest of your life on this miserable little rock.
Screw that, I'm makin' my future.  through the stars~

All the math teachers I've had have been nice, but had REALLY bad tempers and flipped out often.

I hit 15,000 posts without even knowing it, at least the post was good.
Similiar things have been done before.

This may be an improvement, but nothing groundbreaking.

15,000th post woo.

In another slightly related note, Toady has finally been pushed out of the top 10 posters by Josh.
