My Mom's mother passed away last February and she was like the first person I knew enough about to miss.

My mother was growing increasingly anxious about her as the injuries accumulated. First a hip replacement, then a flu, then a knee replacement. I'm glad to know that after the initial grieving my mother will have a little bit off of her mind, and that my grandmother no longer needs to endure through wheelchairs and the boredom of her home.

I did go to a talk about "phantom numbers" once, numbers which can never be represented as decimals as they go on forever without repeating.  There are an infinite amount of said numbers.  It was... weird.

Erm, tell me if I'm wrong--but isn't that just a description of irrational numbers in general?

My Dad's mum died about 5 years ago. She suffered about 3 major strokes in about 2 weeks, although she did spend about 20 years without any incident after a minor stroke in 1985.

My laptop wont fucking charge some god damn reason, this is pissing me off. Fuck you ESPOW, god damn greedy scamming jackasses.

I read about Syd Barrett after getting into alot of early Pink Floyd stuff, this was the first time in a long time that I was close to tears by a real life story.

RIP Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd was never as good without you.

So bored...

I need some explosives. I have all sorts of plant hormones I've never touched, but nothing to light thermite with or mix up something fun.

EDIT:

And now my crappy laptop brick decides to lob some sparks. Well, that *was* an explosion...

I think it still works, but I'm not going to risk another arc.

If anyone here is an electrical engineer, don't design a product to carry house current through totally unshielded wires. Seriously guys, this is common f***ing sense.

And the broken component is the one I can't replace myself. Godammnit.

Hmm... sortof.

Generally, when you're told about irrational numbers (or at least, whenever I was), it goes sortof like "The square roots of certain numbers are irrational, and go on forever without repeating.  They cannot be expressed as a fraction.  There are also some other transcendental numbers like Pi".  Which sortof makes you think they're rare.  Wheras you can, of course, have a transcendental number just Pi... only, since it has no special significance, it has no name, no definition and no way of being expressed.  It was also sortof about how this messes with standard timelines.

I need to make a 12-volt float charger in a cave with a box of scraps. I got a soldering iron, no solder, and skill. Anyone seen any good diagrams?

Oh!  But we know that there must be uncountably many irrational numbers, because the reals are uncountable and the rationals are countable.  Have you seen a proof of that?  It's exceedingly beautiful.

Quick, get thee to Introduction to Real Analysis by Rudin, 3rd edition.  It is most edifying.

Found some old equipment. My voltmeter helpfully informs me that this particular device will kill me if I touch it in the wrong place even when the battery is taken out. I'm currently letting it drain completely.

Then I'm going to crank my meter up to the 10,000V range and plug it in.

The rational numbers are countable? Eh, I get confused when different levels(or classifications, or however that works) of infinity come up... I've heard the concept behind that proof before though.

Dangerous=Awesome.

According to my trusty meter, the parts of the device that I need still work. Yay! I just need to make some modifications so as to better access them.
Note to self: Need gloves.

Yes, you can create a bijection between them and the natural numbers.  The actual proof is a bit less elementary than one would desire, but you can get a nice sketch by searching for Cantor countable rational numbers, or something similar.

I am sad today because I have clearly gone without studying math for so long that I am excited about rational numbers again.
