People downloading music makes me sad. If they download popular music, I am sad because they are listening to bad music, and if they don't, I am sad because an artist who cares about their music does not get money.

You do realize that less popular bands profit more from the free advertising that provides than any sales that might be lost because of it, right? Someone tells you to listen to some band you've never heard of before, are you going to go out and drop $10+ on their albums, or are you going to go download their music (and then there's the fact that if they've got a deal with a recording studio they're making jack shit on cd sales to begin with, so it's not as though your money would go to them in the first place)? If you like the music, there's a decent chance you'll either buy their albums or go to their concerts, and if you don't, how is it any different from hearing it on the radio and not liking it?

For fuck's sake, most of them put their own goddamn music up for free in the first place, so it can't even be fucking called piracy, now can it? This isn't even a subject open for discussion: they consider it free advertising themselves, because it gets their name out there. (which, oddly enough, makes this neither a discussion nor about piracy)
