Bad news everyone. I think I figured out what went wrong with my machine that has been causing me so much trouble.
As it turns out, I think I have burned out my graphics card. According to the damage I saw while cleaning it, I burned out 2 of the capacitors and one more was on it's way to going bye-bye. I needed a replacement anyway, but now it's inevitable. It needs to be replaced. Shamefully, I only had it for
23 years. These cards are fragile.
Then again, I guess I should remember to invest in some cotton swabs and peroxide and clean up the computer regularly. That was really dusty, even worse after the peroxide. The graphics card itself was horrifying. The corpse is cleaned now, but I only realized the capacitor burn out while I was cleaning.
Here's the damage report:
The good news is that my computer is still functional thanks to a native graphics card built into the motherboard. Unfortunately, It's really limited in it's capacity. I can still view in full color and resolution, but I can't overclock or anything of the sort. I don't want to burn out the motherboard itself. So, I'm going to be taking it easy until I can replace the old card. Thank you Toady for not making DF graphics intensive. At least I'll still have some things to be able to play until a replacement comes along, but I can't go nuts with the more crazy things.
Hopefully, I can get the new one in due time. And as for Valve, I proposed the option and explained background of alternative solutions and such, and they're taking longer than usual to respond. I hope they're thinking my options through to minimize trouble for all parties.
Anyway,
it's...EDIT:
It seems I missed out on a few interesting topics while I was SOL and OoC.
Well, at least after dusting it and everything, it's definitely much cooler inside again.
