Dear Caroline's Mom,
Your child is not an achievement-getting robot.  They have feelings and desires.  Please acknowledge that they exist and respond to them.  For instance, they want to have some time to themself instead of loading up on yet more coursework which is really unnecessary for any number of fields.  Further, all this pressure may be compounding personal issues, and leading to even more stress as they try to deal with said nigh completely alone.  They are already overachieving and do not need to do yet more at the expense of their mental health.
Thanks,
Concerned.

Feel free to use that, if you want.

Got slammed with a $240 speeding ticket on my way home from work today.
I acted cheery and made jokes to the officer, but declined to mention to him that all of the money I'd just earned from that graveyard shift was meant to be my next fortnight's food, and now I'm in debt and starving.

Thought about not paying it, but that just accrues a larger debt, and as the government is half my paycheck, they can take it straight out of my earnings anyway.

It's gonna be a hungry couple of weeks.
Heh. Not with a bang but with a whimper. Great knowing you all.

Edit: Made post sound less bleak.

Shit dude, I don't have anything more to add beyond what Spehss said, but you're in my thoughts.

Y'know, dude, if you've got a Paypal or something somehow I could send a few dozen bucks your way. Not exactly solving the problem, but you'll probably spend 'em better than I will.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I've got a big ol list of game ideas lying around that I'll never finish. I can't help but think I'd be better working with someone else who can do the art, and design, and basically everything except the easy programming bits.

Depending on the ideas some might be implementable as mods for existing games.

My cousin was killed in a car wreck a couple of hours ago.  I still don't know the details, but I do feel... shaken.  I didn't see her but once or twice a year, but we used to spend a lot of time together when we were young.

This... is going to take time to come to terms with.

...for what it's worth, *hug*.

I've had a few deaths in the family this year too. If you're looking for advice, please just take whatever time you need to grieve. Be with people who loved her too, if you can. And people who love you.

Hang in there, and take care of yourself. If you like, convince yourself you're working as fast as you can right now, and keep taking whatever steps can be managed. You've got this.

I don't know of a soup kitchen, but I do know where I can buy some cup noodles. All I've gotta figure now is how I'll get rent next week.
Also wow, descan and bauglir... that's really kind. But giving me money would probably introduce a bad precedent into the forum.

Anywho, after sleeping on it, I should be fine. The belt could use a little tightening anyhow, and worrying isn't gonna magically make my finances clear up so all I'm doing is making myself feel as shitty as my situation.

if it makes you feel better, the programming bits are not easy, it's just that you can do them

Tack, next time my overprotective mother sends me a box of entirely unasked-for foodstuffs I'll forward it to you, if you want.
Not sure when it will happen next but it always does. Usually I just wish she sent me something useful like comic books or alcohol instead, but if the stuff can do some good for someone that'd be pretty cool.

Well, I'll have plenty of time to work on it after today. Went into the new job, introduced myself to everyone, worked my arms (and legs, and hands, and one shoulder) off for many hours, finished at 3, got home, had a cup of tea, got a phone call, "we don't think you're suitable for the role, don't come back".
Such is life.
