Another one for the back to school pile. I thought I'd have more time to myself when I came up here and quit my job, but it's looking like I'm gonna have to no-life for the majority of the year just to keep pace. At least the material is interesting. I also forgot how reserved everyone here generally is. Back in my home town most people would greet others walking past, or chat with total strangers as long as they didn't seem too busy. Most of the time people up here ignore me when I say anything, but I get an occasional look from people like I asked them how the zipper on my pants works.

Still have nearly two weeks to go until school starts- of course, "school" is an institute in St. Petersburg, and I don't fly out till a week from Friday.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Not to be contrarian, but my sad is that school doesn't start soon enough. As much as I'm glad to finally be getting away from my job, I can't stand the thought of being NEET even for a few days. It's that feeling that used to get me down during the summer time in high school.

I know I was sad about this a single page ago, but it's getting even worse now that school starts tomorrow.
I just can't get myself out of this shitty sad/angry/tired mood. All I can think about is how terrible this year is going to be. I'm going to have no friends, I have such a weird mix of classes that I'll never see anybody for more than one class a day... I'm going to be stuck worrying about my friends who went to other schools all day... I'm not going to fit in at all. I'm socially inept and this school is so much bigger than my old one and I just don't want to go here.

I dove into cooking my food without thinking to read the instructions first. Now I have tough chicken and crunchy rice, because I cooked the chicken before starting the rice, and because I added the rice to the water before boiling the water.

I feel dumb.

First day of my college calculus class. Already have homework, due Thursday. 21 problems, not counting problems that are actually several separate math problems crammed into one number. Hell, the first problem was practically 8 problems. Got a history class at 9 tonight that gets out at 10:20 with a drive that would probably let me be home at 10:45 or 11, and I have a class tomorrow morning at 9, requiring me to wake up earlier to be ready for it.

The suffering has already begun, I see.

I wish getting into a relationship was just as easy as confessing. Just like in my dream.

*sigh*

I woke up.

It depends, really. If you're a twelve-year-old with a thing for Catholic priests, it might work out pretty well :P

I feel dumb.
Throw it on the stovetop and cook in liquid until the rice is soft. This may also soften the chicken as the collagen that is usually the cause of toughness in chicken gelatinizes. This is why chicken in soup, or roasted (if properly basted) is so often tender, and why baked chicken is so often tough and dry no matter how what you cook it in. It needs time, heat, and moisture.

My sad is that, when cooking my chicken and rice (>___________>), I decided to clean beneath the burner to remove a chunk of stuff that was giving off smoke. I did not allow it to cool adequately before gripping it, and one spot of the water-soaked paper towel was too thin, so now I've got a tiny blister on my right index finger.

Also, I guess I'm staying in that class I was going to drop and am instead dropping Russian. Bluh bluh, being a responsible adult, bluh bluh. It'll be easier to pick up in my post-semester free time with the textbooks and online resources I'll save before dropping than the policy evaluation class.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Read this.

I who am dead a thousand years,
And wrote this sweet archaic song,
Send you my words for messengers
The way I shall not pass along.

I care not if you bridge the seas,
Or ride secure the cruel sky,
Or build consummate palaces
Of metal or of masonry.

But have you wine and music still,
And statues and a bright-eyed love,
And foolish thoughts of good and ill,
And prayers to them who sit above?

How shall we conquer? Like a wind
That falls at eve our fancies blow,
And old Maeonides the blind
Said it three thousand years ago.

O friend unseen, unborn, unknown,
Student of our sweet English tongue,
Read out my words at night, alone:
I was a poet, I was young.

Since I can never see your face,
And never shake you by the hand,
I send my soul through time and space
To greet you. You will understand.

By James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915).

It made me inexpressably sad.

My mind has an unfortunate no win scenario

I am not happy unless everyone around me is happy

But often what other people want is something that will make me unhappy...
