Because people like ideas like karmic retribution, getting your just desserts, and good triumphing over evil much more than they like downer endings. And also because pulling off a story with characters of different shades of grey (no not that one) instead of a defined black and white side is much, much harder to do as a writer (and is also prey to falling to the "Why do I care about these people" syndrome).

It's just as easy to fall on the other side of the fence too. Maybe it's just me, but I think action movies (especially the subset based around revenge) often fall into the trap of making the main character do much worse things than the villain ever does in the name of "justice." They play it completely straight and almost always continue to present their actions as 100% justified, no matter how over the top their dickery gets. I get that over the top is the point, but it still happens.

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.

In my opinion, Game of Thrones does this fairly well. You're generally supposed to be rooting for the Starks, but then even they do some questionable things. The Lannisters are supposed to be the villains, but they also go against their alignment sometimes.

Yeah that's one example. Another nice one that I like to reference is the Fate/Zero series, where you don't know who to root for to win.

Blegh.

I feel like I'm annoying to most of my friends. I don't try to be annoying of course. I'm a little over enthusiastic about some things, but meh.

I don't have much to say to be honest.

Ugh. Playing Pox Nora. Seem to be leading in the class of 'getting ass handed to'.
Doesn't help that the game is so dead the only people I play against are lvl99.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

Agh! The trailer I have been assigned to pick up needs repair; someone or something cut the power lines to one of the turn signals and now it isn't road-legal. Which means I'm probably stuck here until someone can come out to fix it, and Armok alone knows when that will happen.

Have you tried splicing the cables back together? little electrical tape and some excess wire scraps can fix many lights.

Looks like someone tried that already, probably how it got out here in the first place (unless whoever brought it here just didn't check or care). Unfortunately this truck doesn't have any tape aboard, and the leads on the light fixture itself are so cut down I'm not sure splicing is possible. Just a little nub of insulation with wire somewhere inside.

I slept four hours last night because there was a party in the dorm. I have been up for some 15 hours, interacting with people for the entirety of that period. I skipped dinner because I wasn't feeling like eating. I tried to fall asleep for an hour before giving up because there's another dorm party raging outside and that isn't happening.

I am too exhausted to keep myself positive and I can't fall asleep because my head is buzzing with negative thoughts.

Been feeling irritable all day. Also feeling directionless and bored. There's this lurking unease at how I'm wasting my time. I've done nothing all weekend. There's nothing I want to do. All my interests aren't interesting. No idea what I'm supposed to do with this stupid free time I have.

I have no goals and my life is literally pointless and meaningless.

Getting goals isn't exactly hard once you get down to it. And if your interests are not interesting, either they aren't, by definition, interests, or you're clinically depressed.

It may seem strange, but try playing games.
Philosophical and sad ones. Then try to make everyone happy after that, in account of your sadness.
I recommend playing "The company of myself", it's quite interesting.

Last night was my first one sleeping alone in some time. Started going existential and breaking down. Not fun, would not recommend.
