Pretty sure hes talking about his daughter.

That or he and his wife normally sleep in different beds.

Ya, I'd be more concerned if that was my wife, her family has a history of dementia... as it is, it's pretty standard for children to latch on to irrational fears (monster's under bed/in closet, dark, etc.). I just need to figure out how to deal with it now. Kids do not come with an instruction manual, and there's a ton of strategy guides out there, but they often have very conflicting information.

Might want to hurry to the end of the book. It's a reassuring ending, if I recall correctly. Maybe gloss over a few chapters to get there faster?

This isint what happened in the books, and I am sad because of it.
Well worth the read. Thank you for posting that.

I guess spoiler warning for a children's book?

Anyways, early on in the book, the main character is turned in to a mouse. The book ends with him defeating the witches, but staying a mouse, with only like 8 years left to live, but that's ok because he didn't want to outlive his grandmother anyways... Not exactly a reassuring ending?

My wife started reading Roald Dahl's "The Witches" to my 6 year old. For some reason, just one chapter in, she's decided that witches are the worlds most terrifying thing, and has been waking up once a night saying she doesn't feel safe in her bed. I do not even know how to start to deal with this. She refuses to accept that they aren't real. She can't sleep in our bed forever, but it's starting to get out of hand after about 5 days of it...

That book freaked me out really badly when I read it at about that age, I think possibly because it presents witches as being real. I have mixed feelings about Roahld Dahl's children's books in general.

See, I read a ton of his stuff when I was younger and just loved it all. Anyways, I don't think it's going away at this point, so it's parental damage control time. Going to sit down with her this evening and talk it out, plus I have a friend whom my daughter loves, who actually identifies as a witch. So I may get her to sit down and talk about the difference between fictional witches and real world witches.
This second one could potentially backfire though... will need to think through carefully.

Ooh, that sounds like a good opportunity. As long as said friend lets your daughter pull her hair to make sure it's not a wig.

Assuming your kid is fairly logical, of course. Otherwise some minor rewriting of the ending might be easier.

As I remember it, I found a lot of Roald Dahl stuff pretty creepy (though I only read translated semi-graphic album adaptions, so in not sure how representative of the originals they were). Not the content itself, but the atmospheres. They just evoked a feeling of uncomfort and eerieness.

The only Roald Dahl story that I know is the GVR.

Which, now I think about it, is probably called the BFG or something in English :P

Read Prattchett for kids to her.

Seriously. The Wee Free Men would literally be an instant fix.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

Same here.

Also, just read any Pratchett to her. Probably one of the witch ones, show her that not all witches are evil dahl creations.

Pratchett is a very tempting solution. I think I have one or two of the witch ones kicking around.

That being called BFG in English thoroughly amuses me.
